Parker Vacumatic 1937 Find, No Cap Oblique Nib?

I have received this capless vacumatic and wonder if you can tell which cap would be needed.

I know at this point it will be a marriage, however if you find the right cap, would it not make it semi-original. I do not plan on selling the unit as it fits my writing style with the right footed 15 deg oblique. It feels like an oblique. I will put the photographs to clear up any issues I have made.

It is good to be back, 2014 was an extremely busy year, did not make the philly show, but will be in Atlanta in April. That is a for sure. I miss europe, and Hawaii is getting boring, no pen shops, just luck of the draw, and im not selling much or buying much in the last few months. Any help on this unit is appreciated. The barrel is tassied. the filler is speedline notched. The only thing is the blindcap is a shorty. Cheers GSM

The pen has a lockdown filler, which pre-dated the speedline filler.

Measurements of the pen will help to give an idea of what cap it would've had.

You might do best at the pen show. I have a couple of lockdown vacs that are ostensibly the same model, but the caps don't interchange properly.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

The nib looks more worn than it does oblique.

You'll need a first-generation cap, the one with the 3 bands. Not sure what size, however. I think you might have a slender, but comparison with other pens would answer the question for sure. That's whty a pen show might be a good place to look for a new cap.

I agree. If the barrel diameter is 12mm than your pen might be a Slender, which would need a cap that has the 3 thin bands and feather clip.

I will start at the Atlanta pen show. I will make a new photo of the nib, I also want to compare that right footed to a left oblique, and see if you think it looks worn. I have always felt when writing the worn nibs were more scratchy then a smooth line. I have four vacs that all need service. Im not sure why the blue azures all come out of the woodwork at once. I think people stop collecting some models, Therefore they switch to the burgandys etc... I would like to know really the most common of the vacumatics?

Thank you for this very helpful info, wish i could have made it to the philly show.

cheers

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
