J. Herbin - Cacao Du Bresil

I remembered buying this ink after reading this review & "tucked it away" without opening until today. I just filled a pen with a Goulet 1.5 stub nib & when writing in a Rhodia web notebook found myself writing beneath a pen filled with Hieronymus "Brown One".............after drying it is surely VERY close, just a bit darker. A marvelous $10.00 alternative to a $50.00 ink that is almost as expensive to ship! This one is a beauty & I thank you for your excellent review.

Just wanted to say that your review was the clincher in my decision to buy a full bottle of Cacao du Bresil today. I do pen+water drawings (usually Pilot fineliner, brush pen, or Muji pens + water) and was looking to start using a fountain pen regularly in this capacity. I find many reviews, while also immensely helpful (not to mention enjoyable to read), definitely skew more towards a writing angle. So I really appreciate that you showed water drops and washes and that lovely warbler illustration to convey a clearer idea of potential results. Not to mention the fascinating chromatography. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! I'm super excited about using this colour!

You're very welcome. Please update us with how you like the ink once you've tried it out.

Edited to add: Bonus points for a sketch : )

Interesting. Care to post a scan of these two inks side-by-side?

I am sorry but I do not have a scanner nor the sense to use one if I had it. If you will PM me your address I will happily post a sample of both to you.

I loooove it! Here a few doodles I posted to instagram:

I do find the nuances of the colour are difficult to capture (although I suppose you can say that for many inks). I tried to slightly adjust most of the photos to make the ink colour more accurate to what I was seeing (taupe with lavender undertones). I love that it captures a warm feeling to it without being overtly brown, and I adore how subtle it is.

Nice review. I have this ink as well and I find particularly well suited for wet or broad nibs.

Yay, my bottle arrived today and what a lovely color it is! It's definitely brown, in case you're wondering. Or is it? Maybe it's grey with a brown-ish tint. Or, perhaps, as Maiji says, it's taupe with a lavender undertone. Order a bottle and decide for yourself.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Hahaha, that's great! It really is quite magical in how difficult to it is to pin down! I'd love to find more ink colours like this.

Excellent review! From a perspective of art, I can see the appeal of this ink. It is a very versatile color. From the perspective of every day writing, I am not too thrilled with the color. I prefer a warm brown for my daily writing. But, just because I really liked the review, I am going to order a sample and try it out. Thank you again!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
