Oh, thanks for the heads up, I'll stay away from that one.

I get that especially from wet flowers (wet flowing nibs, not the plants)

Akkerman Diep Duinswaterblauw is the latest culprit! Beautiful colour most of the time, but sometimes - ugh!

I agree. I like a little sheen but with a wet nib and an ink like Sargasso Sea or Majestic Blue, I don't like how the sheen dominates the colour.

Then stay away from Sailor Jentle Ink yama dori. Unless you want a turqoisey ink with red sheen.

Another one to stay away from is DCSS Blue. Even on lousy paper it sheens. OTOH, it smudges even after it should be well and truly dry long since....

It's too bad, because the color is amazing. Unless you're Veltri, of course....

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Akkerman Shocking Blue is a bit of a red sheener

Nahh, that shows a red sheen too, under the right conditions, as does PQ Permanent Blue.

Inks that don't sheen - Noodler's Blue and Ottoman Azure, PR Lake Placid Blue,

Also, if your pens are too wet, or the inks too concentrated, that can bring out the red sheen. Set your nibs to be a bit drier, and dilute your inks (take 5mls and add 1ml water to see how that works for you).

Some people love sheen, others (and the set probably includes some of the former set) love shading.

Still others (poor, tortured souls) dislike either or (heaven forfend) both.

Some people drink warm beer.

I generally dislike sheen and I love shading. If I have a shading ink that sheens at the very end of strokes (where the ink pools), I actually like the effect.

Please package up all the sheen out of your blue ink and send it to those of us who like it. We'll add it to ours!

I love anything I can get: sheen, shading, line variation, etc. that makes the ink more interesting than monoline, monochromatic ballpoint ink.

Oh, I want to see *that* Venn diagram. Especially including the "warm beer drinkers" subset....

I can't do it with circles.

To include all possiblities ( i.e. Likes Sheen, Dislikes Shading, Likes Warm Beer) I ended up with some drunken ghosts...

I only started to read this thread so that I could find out about inks with the sheen; As the culprits are identified I'm making a list. :puddle:

I detest any-temp beer.

I couldn't get PR Naples Blue to stop sheening. Had to trade it off because it became distracting while reviewing.

Sounds as if you should post your results to the "A Few Ghosts..." thread!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
