Organic Brown - Caran D'ache

When I got sick few years ago (virus called pens and inks), I started picking different inks. I was amazed by Caran d'Ache Color of the Earth inks.

The thing is the inks were discontinued before I had a chance to try all of them. I was disappointed to hear Colors of the earth were replaced by Chromatics.

OK, the bottle is cool, colors seem nice, so what's the problem?

One - no more Amazon and Grand Canyon! I can get over Amazon, with time I started to prefer murkier greens, but Grand Canyon was in my top 5 of browns.

Two - the price. OK, Chromatics bottles are 50 ml compared to Colors of the Earth 30 ml bottles yet the price per ml increased by 25,7 % (I compare prices in Poland : 55 PLN / 30 ml vs 115 PLN / 50 ml).

Are they really worth it? Well, I like the way Caran d'Ache market their products, I like the bottle and the brand. If I'll be able to try all of these inks, I'll review them here. It will take time though. At the moment I have only sample of Organic Brown and Ultraviolet bottle. Some time ago I've reviewed Infinite grey which was cool.

  1. Cosmic Black
  2. Delicate Green
  3. Divine Pink
  4. Electric Orange
  5. Hypnotic Turquoise
  6. Idyllic Blue
  7. Infinite - Grey
  8. Infra Red
  9. Magnetic Blue
  10. Organic Brown
  11. Ultra Violet
  12. Vibrant Green

Organic Brown is rather nice BUT there's just nothing special about it. It's not unique, it's not waterproof, lubrication isn't stunning, another brown in the sea of browns. I like it but I don't think it's - objectively - worth the money. If however writing with Caran d'Ache inks makes you feel better and you can afford it, it shouldn't disappoint you.

Personally I'm disappointed with this ink. I like the color but Grand Canyon was special and unique, Organic Brown is just nice.

This is wonderful. Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I didn't like it at all. Maybe I should try it again, but why? As you say there are so very many nice(-er) browns out there. I think I can hear Diamine Chocolate Brown calling me.....

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

I never owned a bottle of Canyon..... but I did try the ink... I miss it too.. :crybaby: ...

I actually like this brown... but not enough to pay for a bottle... the price is rather ridiculous, since there is really nothing special about it.. Thanks for the Review... and I really hope I don't end up liking any of them... :P

I guess I got lucky then. Managed to get a bottle of Grand Canyon on clearance at Bromfield Pen Shop when I was there after Christmas. Even at half-off, it still probably wasn't cheap....

Thanks for the review -- particularly the comparisons. I can see how different Grand Canyon and Organic Brown are.

I find it okay but only okay. Grand Canyon is my very favourite brown of all of the browns I have (alongside Galileo Manuscript, which is again available).

Thank G.

What's the current batch of Galileo like? Someone in my local pen club had a bottle a couple of years ago and I found it to be really red-leaning (way too much so for my taste).

I dunno. My batch was from 2010 to 2012 or so and at least "something" like CdA's GC, although of course much lighter. No red. More sandy, more like a manuscript....

Personally I'm dissatisfied with this ink. I like the color but Grand Canyon was special and unique, Organic Brown is just nice. Also lack of better lubrication and the fact it's prone to fading are an issue for me given the ink price. The packaging is premium but the product isn't.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
