Death Of The Penmanship Forum

Recommended Posts

Ever since the penmanship forum here on FPN was killed and the 4 replacement forums were installed, I have noticed a large decline in the number of overall penmanship/calligraphy posts. To tell you the truth, I think having one forum made it much easier to keep track of posts and one could easily know which forum to post in. It seems that the "penmanship community" here on FPN has been broken into smaller segments. Overall, I just miss the penmanship forum. Is there no going back?

As I got more and more into FPs last year, I contemplated getting into one or another form of calligraphy, but as I looked at all the other demands on my time, I decided that I don't really have the time to spend leaning Spencerian or italic. That said, I still like reading about it. So I'm going to follow this thread.

Until you ink a pen, it is merely a pretty stick. --UK Mike

I'm afraid I don't check the new calligraphy forums much and that's a little sad as the Penmanship forum was the main reason I used to visit FPN. Splitting the Forums will probably mean that there are some forums that will only get a single new thread a week or so.

I know for me I started down the road of flex pens and looking into spencerian script, then in passing I saw a wonderful post by Ken on Business Monoline and that took me down a new direction. Not sure if that would happen with the new forums.

Still it maybe just change we need to get used to.

+1

I found this new arrangement after a few months' inactivity, and I'm not sure I see the point yet. The volume of posts in the penmanship forum was not so large as to split it in four, IMO.

I'm still trying to figure out how a few of the threads I started ended up in "Calligraphy Discussions", and not in the "Handwriting & Handwriting Improvement" sub-forum.

What can we do to realign the planets bring our fountain pen- addicted filled lives back in order?(aka How can we get our forum back)? How many votes or virtual signatures, or how many complaints are needed? We could just band together and go to administration. Who will join me?

Maybe a reaction like this was what the 'management' wanted. That we would get annoyed, band together and start posting to the handwriting forum.

Hadn't noticed!

I use the search + new + forums link to browse FPN, choosing the forums I want from the left-hand side of the page. I have to keep up with the forum changes, but it does mean I come home from work and see three pages of interesting new stuff rather than twenty pages of

  • Is my Montblanc fake?
  • I didn't use ammonia and a pen flush and an ear syringe and an ultrasonic cleaner between fills - have I ruined my pen?
  • My pen has nib creep - should I ask for a refund?
  • This pen cost $500 but it doesn't flex - why is this brand rubbish?
  • What colour ink should I put in this pen?
  • How much is this pen worth?
  • Is this a genuine Montblanc?

and on and on... ;)

Hey can you help me figure out if my Montblanc is the real thing? :)

I tend to hit the "view new content" button, then read threads that interest me, rather than by sub-forum or by what brunico does. I'll admit that I didn't actually notice that the Penmanship Forum had splintered so drastically, but then, I've got a lot of catching up to do after not having been on for several days....

Thought it was terrible at first, then adjusted to the change and find it okay now. Just more button pushing to get where I want to go.

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

I agree with the OP. Too many topic headings overall. The multiplicity of forums on ink testing, in particular, is paralyzing. My response: I just don't find myself visiting FPN as often any more. It's too hard to find material now. Leonardo da Vinci was right: simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, not complexity.

Agreed. I felt like the way it was laid out before made sense and was easily navigable. I've been away from FPN with a few exceptions to research a specific topic, but this is disorienting. :(

Didn't we have a pinned thread of people posting writing samples? Still looking for that... Maybe it wasn't pinned but just so active it always floated near the top.

Totally agree. The Ink related forums are ridiculously & unnecessarily convoluted. I used to look at them all the time, but since the new arrangement I hardly ever bother. Why is it so disjointed & complex? It's quite bizarre.

What Ruth said. I either skim all the new content for interesting-looking threads, or I use the search feature to find some particular information. I have no idea how the new organization of forums is different from the old organization. :)

When I have a handwriting question I never know whether to post here or in calligrapy discussions. Mind boggling.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
