Pif And Waitstaff/servers

I've heard quite a lot about the PIF with drinks at coffee houses and such. But does anyone ever buy pens to accompany gratuities at restaurants/bars? Not instead of a tip, but in addition - after all, writing implements are tools of the trade and tend to disappear . . .

Or is this a one person campaign?

Yep. But my M.O. is to buy the better quality non-advertising pens by the dozen expressly for the purpose of distribution. Often, people will try to give them back when they see they aren't dollar store throwaways. They think I forgot my pen. Nope - it's yours, but try not to let the next customer nick it :)

Admittedly, they are purchased when on sale. It allows more generosity. Maybe I was just so traumatized by an event a few years ago. I purchased a beverage at the counter of a local coffee house and paid with my plastic. They wanted a signature on the receipt but couldn't locate a pen, a marker, a pencil. Finally they produced a crayon! How in the world they functioned was beyond me. I had used Sharpies before, but this was a first. Since it was a "to go" order, I didn't go fish out a pen from my bag. Now I have spares at the ready.

I think it's a great idea!!

So, what's your point?

Just tell them it's part of the tip and a bonus!

That sounds like it would be fun to be on the receiving end of! It's also a very unique and memorable gesture. I can't imagine anyone would be able to forget it!

I have given away more than one nice ballpoint in that manner.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Agree. But can also understand that some might be genuinely surprised.

Have to say that I admire that lady's skill on the skateboard too. Never been able to stay on one for more than two seconds even if it was standing still ....!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
