Still taking swatches?

I'd consider Noodler's Polar Blue to be a pretty clean blue/black. However, it does feather.

If it isn't too bright for you, it isn't bright enough for me.

Monteverde Blue-Black. This is a very black-leaning BB with just a tinge of blue. I think it has a bit more blue IRL than the scanner captures.

I think of it as blue, but I love the drawing!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I forgot that blue-black inks had their own thread. I may have wrongly posted some blue-blacks in the blue thread.

First is a typography exercise done with Lamy Al-Star <M> and Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

"Night Gathers" is a piece of the vow of the Night Watch.

Paper is Clairefontaine 90 g/m.

And here is a side by side doodle with two of my blue-black inks.

Pens are Faber-Castell Loom <M> with Diamine Blue-Black, and Lamy Al-Star <M> with Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

Paper is Clairefontaine 90g/m.

Two of my favorite blue-blacks! Platinum BB is the only bottle in my collection that is half empty since it sees so much work.

Totally understandable and feel free to post in both places if you are unsure of where it should be.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm not fond of them but I made a swatch of Shimmering Seas and I like how these three blobs convey its levels of saturation. On the left it's Seas over-saturated, in the middle it's under-saturated, and on the right it's a happy in-between.

But yeah, blobs are too impersonal, too heartless for me, so here's a bewildered fish.

Tomorrow new inks should arrive, he'll have plenty of friends.

No cure for existential crisis though. Sorry fish, you're on your own there, like the rest of us.

Yesterday my first RK inks arrived. :D Among them is my second iron gall ink (I forgot Pelikan 4001 BB).

Salix is so well-behaved, it's unbelievable. I filled one of the forms for a PhD application, so on post-print copy paper, and there's no spread, no showthrough, let alone bleedthrough, barely any feathering at all. I can finally rotate my Pelikan 4001 BB pen now!

Pen: Wing Sung 3008 <NO NAME F>

Ink: Rohrer Klingner Salix

Paper: Copy 80g/m.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
