Bought A Rough Condition M900 Toledo -Question On Converting It

Recommended Posts

A while back I bought a rough condition M900 Toledo at a bargain price due to a mishap with a polisher tool.

I considered having it repaired, but now I'm thinking I want to convert it to a rollerball if possible.

The photos make it look better than it really is. Some ink oozed at the finger area at first, but now I think there's dried in in there, so it doesn't leak, but i don't trust it of course.

I knew I was buying a fixer upper.

Thoughts if conversion is possible.

It's a Toledo - get it repaired! Ron Zorn could probably make it look great.

I don't know if it can be converted. Maybe. I know that the same barrel is used for the 800 RB and FP, but the RB has a brass sleeve inserted, and a different blind cap assembly instead of the piston mechanism. The nose cone on the RB screws into the section instead of a nib. But a 900 may be different. The lower end pens have a fixed front end that can't be unscrewed. I'll have to check with my contacts to see....

The damage to the section is an issue, but I've reattached sections that have snapped off, so one assumes that this one could be cut off and a new one put in it's place if a donor is available. Not cheap though.

Thank you all who have clicked in and made a comment.

Restoring to original could be an option, but since I have a Toledo 700 FP, I figured it would be nice to have a rollerball.

What an unfortunate mishap to mar so beautiful a pen. A Toledo is my grail and it is sad to see a bird so wounded. Hope that you can get a reasonable repair and bring some new life into it.

I do think this is worth a trip to Germany to visit Mama Pelikan. It's an amazing pen.

Just my 2c, and of course it's not my pen (sadly).

I, also, hope that you have it repaired. It would be nice to see full pictures of the pen as it is now and once it is restored. Owning a Toledo is not in my plans, but they are true beauties.

Thank you all for your comments.

After reading all of your thoughts, it seems a before and after scenario is in order.

Now to find the address to send this in, anyone have that?

Is it just the section that's messed up? What is the condition of the binde? If that's good than yes, I agree -- its worth it to get that pen repaired.

Thank you all for the replies. Looks like she has to go to Germany.

The binde is in excellent condition. Should they repair it, I want this binde to stay with the pen. That has been my worry that they might replace the entire pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
