Building My First Pen

Dear Builder community,

I'm a fountain pen collector, and avid fountain pen user. I use all of my pens, even the pricey ones. I'm also a DIYer and want to construct my first fountain pen. I have some ideas and drawings for more complicated pens, but I wanted to start out with something very simple: A PVC fountain pen.

I want to take some small-gauge 1/4" PVC for the body and a larger gauge for the cap; maybe 3/8" or 1/2". I need to figure out how to get them to screw together. My first design will be an eye dropper, where I use a screwed fitting to seal the other end of the PVC pipe body and cap. I'll remove some PVC from the barrel to form the grip section, and screw in a nib/feed/nib collar into the PVC.

Has anyone tried this before? Am I missing something, or is this a bad idea?

Tom

I've used PVC to make a pen before but not from pre-made tube like think you are wanting to do. I used PVC from a new sewer line that was being put in locally. The pipe was 30" plus across and over an inch thick. The green scrap pieces about 3' long were mine for the asking. The stuff comes in other colours depending on the use and locality using it. White, light and dark blue, green and even pink can be found sometimes. On the lathe it cuts with long shavings that don't break so you need to interrupt the cut often or stop and remove them as they wrap around the piece. Threading is easy. If you want some and can't scrounge up any where you live I can send some your way. If going for the sewer pipe I strongly recommend "virgin pipe". ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
