I put a Knox #6 size 1.1 stub nib in my Duragraph because the nib came in black and I just couldn't get past how the bad the black nib looked on my pen. The nib assembly unscrews from the section. The nib is press-fit into the assembly. I wiggled it a little and the black nib came out and the I inserted the new nib. You don't actually have to unscrew the nib assembly if you are just changing the nib. The original nib was very smooth and plenty wet; no complaints other than nib color.

I recently purchased a Conklin Eudora. Ink flow was horrible. Even after priming, the nib is scratchy. Probably the worst pen I've ever purchased. Contact Yafa customer service and said they would send a replacement nib, but it never came. So lesson learned. It just sits and looks pretty in the box.

Alyson - Have you been able to inspect your nib for tine alignment? These pens are pretty simple and can usually be coaxed into writing well. Scratchy usually means the tines have an alignment problem. Most of the nibs "look" OK without a loupe, so they pass inspection but may not write.

I have several modern Conklins. All have great nibs most have issue that prevent them from being either usable or a pleasure to use. One leaks into the cap regardless of the position it is carried in. Another has lost its clip and I can not get it replaced nor guidance on how to replace it, I have replaced many clips on vintage Conklins. The cap of another does not thread on to the pen nicely. All these are Mark Twain models.

The most recent, a Conklinetta, has no issues and is a wonderful pen.

The Vintage Conklins I have are a real treat to use and easy to restore, when parts can be found that fit.

Nice entertaining review. Thanks for posting it.

I have an All American in tortoise shell with a medium nib and like it quite a bit. I adjusted the nib to make it a bit wetter because I prefer really wet nibs, but mine wrote smoothly and well out of the box.

I have a Conklin Duragraph in amber. It was actually the first pen i bought new. I tend to look for bargains on the second-hand sites in here in the Netherlands. It's also the most I ever spent on a pen untill now. But I like it so much, I ordered the forest green version yesterday, along with some J Herbin inks. I can't wait for them to arrive.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
