Thanks for the reminder!

I have a Densho that I haven't used much lately but now I will make a point of putting it into rotation.

Looking at current pricing, I should have sprung for that Genkai in dark red when I wanted to!

a vermillion Mikado and a Genkai.

thanks for sharing. I have a few that I want to hang on to for a while:

- a tame nuri Hakkaku with clip

- a Grand Trio (basically a maki-e hyotan) with lots of gold

- a Kaijin (between the size of a Mikado and Genkai) mother of pearl blank.

The Kaijin I got off Kevin as he was clearing out some pens last year. He told me there were only a few (3 blanks) that Danitrio had that were not covered in maki-e and he is keeping one. Once painted, the pens go for $12K to $20K. I am OK with just the blank. :)

Interesting. But to me they look awkward to hold. One thing I love about the Danitrio pens is that the section width is not a big step down from the barrel, so they're very comfortable in the hand.

I am sorry I did not see this post before. Here are the pictures of my 3 pens. I stole 2 of them from the sellers and the Kaijin I took at my office a few weeks ago.

Oh my, those are gorgeous! Especially the Kaijin. The "Wave" model featured on Mottishaw's site is like $7,000, which is I'm sure a fair price for the work involved. Just way beyond my reach. I'd be willing to pay up to $1,500 or so for a blank one, though. It sounds like I won't ever get the chance being that only three were made. Thank you for sharing those pictures!

Beautiful pens!

For me, the Kaijin's pronounced step from the barrel to the section would be a dealbreaker.

I have a Sho-Genkai that I rarely use (can't get used to the stub nib). I have been thinking about selling it for some time. Do you think someone would be interested?

I picked up one of these from another member here. As expected, these pens start to oxidize when used. I don't mind the effect.

What a great deal these were when new for some innovative shapes and filling systems.

  • 1 year later...

I had a Densho and a Mikado both RE, but ended up selling them to fund other purchases. I do have a RE Takumi with Yin Yang sterling silver and abalone inlays in it.

I am not selling any of my current crop of Dani Trio's. I learned my lesson...

Doug, are you sure the yin yang pen is RE? I have the same pen. It looks like has a layer of urushi. I compared it with my RE densho, they look different.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
