Cacao Du Bresil - J. Herbin

J. Herbin was established in 1670.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.

By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.

That's what J. Herbin says about themselves. They've been on the market for quite some time and I guess they now what they're doing.

Cacao du Bresil is decent brown, rather on the dry side.

This is one of my favorite inks, and perhaps my favorite brown. I wish J.Herbin would offer it in the 100 ml bottle.

They used to, back before the color change. I fell in love with the shade when it was a vintage sepia-black color.. This chocolate milk iteration came a few years back when the EU imposed regulatory changes and ruined many a gorgeous color.

It might be healthier, but I don't like this version's color & stopped buying it.

I wasn't around for the original version. I like this version a fair amount, but I've read that sometimes the ink can have sediment in the bottom.

Thanks for clarifying....

I still have a bottle of the older version, so, was surprised to see how the color samples in the first post didn't jibe with my experience.....

And agree, new color is no improvement.....unless you're a chocolate milk fan......

Vis, thanks for the milk chocolate ghost. He reminds me of Count Chocula.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 1 month later...

My bottle of Cacao du Bresil looks nothing like this (see my review here). I really hope you guys are not right about the reformulation because my bottle is almost out... I bought mine in 2013 and it is the more sepia looking grey/brown.

Update: I just received a new bottle of Cacao du Brésil and I'm happy to say it is the same wonderful color I always knew (not the milk chocolate atrocity shown here).

I think there have been a couple of bad batches of this one along the way.

Cacao de Bresil is an interesting ink I'm not that fond of. I'm not crazy about the color although in some nibs and on some papers it can look quite nice. One thing is sure - it's quite unique. Some people will enjoy this hue, others not so much. What all can appreciate is rather appropriate behavior. This ink is easy to clean, won't clog your pen, shouldn't cause any feathering. It feels watery and doesn't offer much lubrication.

This is one tough cookie to show accurately - I think it is a very special colour. I'd be miffed if they've changed it's looks :(

Thankfully, my bottle looks nothing like either of yours visvamitra but exactly like Jasonchickerson's. Phew. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
