All Time Favorite Ink

Ambrose Bierce

Recommended Posts

After going through more than two dozen bottle of Pelikan 4001, I am now a big fan of Aurora black. I love how lubricated it is, how very black. Yama Guri, Tsuki yo and Montblanc Toffee Brown are inks I've also started to like very much.

But I always go back to black, as black ink is least distracting. Aurora black is my current favorite.

Organic Studios Blue Merle

Easy to clean up, flows well, and is well behaved on all kinds of paper. I love the color and the shading. It's my perfect ink, which explains why it is no longer made . I bought 8 bottles of it to make sure I'd have some for a while.

Amen amen amen!!!!!

Iroshizuku Ku-jaku.

Yup. Same here. It's always in one of my pens, these days.

And a simple bottle of Waterman's black is hard to beat, for a pure, wet, solid black.

It has to be KWZ IG Red # 3.

It is quite wonderful to observe the bright red writing turn into a deep dark red before my eyes. As an iron gall ink, I do have to flush my pen thoroughly after every fill.

Honourable mentions to:

- J.Herbin Poussiere de Lune

- Diamine 150th Anniversary Terracotta

Pens: Conid Kingsize ebonite (x2)
Inks:
KWZ Dark Brown / KWZ IG Orange / Diamine Chocolate / Diamine Burnt Sienna / Diamine Ochre / Monteverde Scotch Brown

Wow! Somebody revived this one.

O.K., I'll play along. My favorite today would likely be Montblanc Lavender Purple. It shades and sheens and loves every pen I own.

I was looking for a zombie image and didn't have one. Maybe I can find Zombie green?

Okay, today it is PR Sherwood Green because it has evaporated and has serious sheen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Solely for looks = Noodlers Bay State Blue. If this ink could be used safely in all pens it would be the greatest ink on earth

I havent used a great number of inks but out of the 20 or so Ive used it would either be Private Reserve Plum or Noodlers Dumas Tulipe Noire (the noodlers depends on which paper, some bring out the purple very nice)

Zombie Green has to be Wancher Matcha Green. At least when it gets on your fingers.

I have a love/hate relationship with Parker Quink. It is the perfect ink for me, dries fast enough, that greyish undertone gives it some sort of shading, you put it into a pen and forget about it and it does no harm, it's easy to flush, does not stain, lubricates without being watery, I used it with success on cheap printer paper on both sides of the sheet without bleed through.

Sadly it has zero water resistance, and it smudges if you hand is even so slightly sweaty, making a mess everywhere.

Cruel choice! That's like asking which pet/child is your favorite.

Sailor Miruai and Skrip Turquoise.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Pilot Blue Black... others may find the color boring but I love this ink.

- versatile color

- great value

- functionally waterproof

- wonderful even flow

- good lubrication

- relatively easy to clean

- variety of bottle sizes and shapes available

- functional, sturdy, attractive design for the 70 ml bottle

- and -- most important -- does not smear on my Tomoe River paper

From what little I have tried: Diamine Oxblood. It has wonderful character and depth. The flow is excellent as well:no issues with using it in my fine nib Metropolitan. It has great shading, yet remains saturated throughout the stroke and the colour isn't jarring or outrageous. It is sober enough for formal correspondence; it will definitely catch people's eye but it won't be obnoxious at all. It will always be a staple of my collection.

MB Permanent Blue-the color is a basic royal blue, but it behaves beautifully on even bad paper and hasn't cause any pen problems even when i accidentally left it in an unused pen for months.

Pelikan Turquoise-shades even in Japanese F and I think it is neither too green nor too blue

From what I've seen, Aurora BB has a good shot at joining the list.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
