It depends. I think Morrison Pens are considered "second tier" (as opposed to "first tier" companies like Parker, Sheaffer and Waterman). I can't tell for sure, but your father's pen looks as if it might be full sized (I have a ringtop -- a small pen that would be worn on a cord or chain -- with the same overlay pattern, and I like it a lot -- it has a very nice juicy nib on it). It also depends a lot on condition, such as whether the pen is working (see if the lever moves at all -- don't force it if the lever doesn't, because that means the sac inside is dried out and would need to be replaced); also factors such as the condition of the nib, whether the overlay is gold-filled (there may be some sort of hallmark), and so on.

I have a few Morrisons and I've paid anywhere from about $4 for a black hard rubber barreled ringtop without any sort of overlay) to about $80 for the ringtop version of yours -- but that pen was in working condition when I bought it. So prices are all over the map. I will let people more knowledgable than me weigh in on that.

If it's working, it could be a very nice pen. I'm kinda a sucker for the less well known, second and third tier brands, but not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. Morrison made both low-end pens, and higher-end ones like your dad's. (One of these days I want be able to afford to get my hands on a ringtop with the same overlay but in sterling silver....)

Why do you think it's a Parker? Does it have a Parker nib installed?

Appears to be Morrison's, overlay on black hard rubber, 1930ish?

Typically referred to as third tier, but the ringtop set I have is quite nice. I tend to think some of these bridge into 2nd tier, if you use the tier system.

Were this my dad's pen it would be sent to a competent pen restorer. It IS thin metal so don't go too wild with a polishing cloth.

edit to include, use the search feature, top right, there are overlay Morrison examples on FPN..

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
