Maisgelb (Maise Yellow) - Standardgraph

Standardgraph Zeichentechnik GmbH is german manufacturer of technical drawing instruments, rulers and pencil sharpeners. They also have inks. They manufacture and distribute their own calligraphy products and products from the company Rubinato. I believe Standardgraph inks are made in Germany by Standardgraph.

Tehy offer palette of 24 colors. I'm going to try all of them and review them. It'll take time but I'll do it :) My ambition is to present inks of less known companies as my input here. Of course I stay open to all inks and review bnis and small names. However I must confess I have some sort of weakness for smaller companies and less known brands. I won't favor them, I'll be honest though.

I find Maisgelb stunning. Simply.

Please - remember that in most of my reviews I use very wet pens. Kaweco Sport turned to eyedropper always leaves line that is saturated. If you're notorious fine nib user you may be disappointed by some of inks that appear rich in color in my reviews. They are but only in broad, wet nibs that I use use on everyday basis. I don't really like fine nibs so I almost never use them to review inks.

I have a soft spot for small passionate companies.... Promoting them is a great idea

Hmm.... this one appears warm and golden. I like it.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I bought this ink because of this review, and this is the horrendous colour I got yesterday: flourescent highlighter yellow. I feel a bit like a fool because this would be the second, yes, second time I was dumb enough to buy something from Standardgraph and got the "wrong colour" -- but looking at it makes me think: are you sure you all aren't reviewing Coffee Brown?

Anyway I am beyond peeved off at falling for Standardgraph's faulty colour labels yet again. I know it's only 4€ but the time and headache to get it fixed when no one sells it locally is much more expensive than that. Arg. ARG.

Also, just for anyone else thinking of buying this from Seitz Kreuznach: their swatches are wrong and match Vis's review as well. Or I got the wrong ink in the bottle. Either or, just know that the swatches on the store site are matching this review, and not matching what you get...

Editing in: I'm totally not angry at this review or even Seitz Kreuznach. I'm not sure that came across in my original ranting words, whoops. I am completely angry at Standardgraph for a second fail. They were the first ink company I ever bought a bottled fountain pen ink from and the mess up then nearly turned me off of fountain pens permanently. You know what they say, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice... make raging posts on FPN, I guess.Standardgraph-Maize-Yellow.jpg

Whatever the original review is of it looks to me like a perfect match for Montblanc Purdey & Sons ink and at 4 euro a bottle that would be quite a saving.

I'm pretty sure you got a mislabelled bottle. It's probably Krokusgelb (Crocus yellow):

My bottle of Maize Yellow is a nice golden-beige-yellow color. Not as dark and orange but also not a true bright yellow.

Maybe a mislabeled bottle. I don't think they changed the formula.

Thanks all... I'm sure I got another bum bottle, which makes them 100% wrong for me all of the time now. You know, I really like Fig Brown (the colour they gave me in a 10mL bottle as an apology for the first stuff up), and when I finally got my hands on Burgundy, the colour I wanted, I did like it, and Maisgelb really does look nice here. But if they can't get their labels right twice in a row, I figure I must be particularly unlucky and shouldn't push it anymore.

If you can get the colour it's supposed to be, you're lucky and I envy you! I'm just not inclined to throw any more money at them anymore after being burned twice. Thank you for sleuthing out which colour I sent back, though!

(incidentally, I think Krokusgelb is a nightmare of a colour. A real highlighter ink, no subtlety or nuance at all. Use it to refill your highlighters if you got it, or do what I did and throw it back at the store with great prejudice.)

  • 2 weeks later...

So to follow up on this incident, I mailed Standardgraph directly and got a bit of a confusing answer concerning Maisgelb that may help others, at least in the fact that if you got the wrong colour and complain to the company, they will send you a replacement bottle. Whether or not you get the right colour, well, read on...

Here's my original mail I sent (in German, TL,DR translation: "You guys filled the wrong colour in a falsely labelled bottle twice now, I am annoyed, fix your quality control.")

SgDuH,

MfG,

The answer I got, also in German:

Sehr geehrte Frau ---,

Mit freundlichen Grüßen/with best regards

Translation: "Unfortunately the inks are filled well in advance that way. I'll send you 2 bottles of Krokusgelb Nr. 572207 today (that's the darker one). In the future please order 572207. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

So in other words, they've ??? renamed Maisgelb to Krokusgelb ??? and the only way you'll know if you're getting this colour is if you look for the number 572207 on the bottle somewhere.

I don't know. We'll see what the heck shows up on my doorstep and what it's labelled as this time.

That makes no sense ... or I don get it ;-)

I‘m curious how your new bottles turn out.

I have both Krokusgelb and Maisgelb from many years ago and they don‘t have anything in common.

But my Maisgelb turned to a much more brown shade from a more golden-beige over the last years. So depending on the age the color may turn out different.

Cheers

I know, I clearly said in my email that I ordered Maisgelb, I wanted Maisgelb, and I got Krokusgelb. I'm a little confused by the CS response of "we're sending you 2 bottles of Krokusgelb, don't worry, it's dark" as an answer. I'm really hoping I don't get two bottles of acid yellow that I'll have to offload somehow in my mailbox, though... kudos to the company for trying, I guess.

Conclusion: Buy "Maisgelb" at your own risk, Standardgraph is officially calling it "Krokusgelb" now (even though the label colour is also wrong...) Pics:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
