Hi Ken, and welcome to FPN

You're not likely to get an answer from Cindy, as she has not logged in to FPN since November 2014. ( you can see that when you hover your mouse pointer over the member name just above the avatar)

I would suggest posting your own welcome topic here on the forum, possibly you'll get more answers.

And there are always the well known online shops, like Goulets.

Good luck, and enjoy our forum

Well, big surprise! :) So I was very mistaken there!

I suppose you read the forum without logging in... Though you'll miss out on some aspects then...

I hope you'll be able to help Ken!

Enjoy

Wow, has it been that long? 2014???

Well, yay! I AM still here! Sorry for the silence FPN community. RIGHT after I joined, my too-expensive (but oh-so-awesome) Pelikan FP disappeared. I was absolutely devastated and had no idea where it might have disappeared. But there was no excuse for not signing back-in and thanking so many wonderful welcome messages from this community.

In any case I found the Pelikan after 6 months (in the back lining of the living room couch!) I still use and love my fountain pen collection.

Soooo.....

Welcome Ken!

I have searched high and low for South Sound retailers and haven't had any luck. Very frustrating! I shop online at Goulet Pens and Levenger. But, my go-to place to shop when I want to try out new inks (today! I have very little patience when the paper/pen mood strikes!) is the University Book Store in Seattle. They carry an impressive variety of good quality pens and a number of shelves devoted to quality inks. Knowledgeable staff. An amazing selection of FP friendly paper (Clairefontaine, Rhodia, etc).

So I know "Seattle" is not what you want to hear, and obviously it is much closer to Tacoma than Olympia. But I have looked just about everywhere (even Vashon Island) with no luck. The UW does have a store in Tacoma too- but it is small and they do not carry any fountain pens or ink. Nice selection of quality paper though! I buy Rhodia writing pads there.

Wish I could be more helpful!! I will let you know if I ever come across anything local in the future.

Take care,

Cindy

Thanks! Now how in the world did I reply using the "quote" feature..... but it was sent before I actually included my reply below?? Strange! Oh well. I'm still a newbie! : ) - Cindy

PS- D.ick- I signed up for email notifications on my original posts and Ken's reply sent me a new email. I am glad he reminded me about this community again. I need to visit the site more often!

Welcome aboard. Pelikans are super reliable. Leave them sitting, filled, for weeks, and a Pelikan will happily write right away. Can't say that for all pens in that price point.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, there is a world of ink color choices in bottled ink. Read reviews, and maybe buy samples to try several out. You might find that Pelikan is super cool.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
