I have Montblanc's Royal Blue and Mystery Black. I've been using the blue for about a week now and I quite liked it to begin with, but now I find I'm bored of it - it's a little flat (for me). I like blue/blacks and was wondering if I could mix it with Mystery Black to create something a little interesting. Has anyone done this with good results, and if so, what are the proportions of the mix?

Hello Uncial,

I haven't tried this with MB inks; however, based on previous experiments with other brands, I'll say this much - black is a very strong color - it typically only takes 1 part black, mixed with 10 parts blue, to make a nice looking blue-black.  Of course, YMMV, but I would start out with this mix ratio and work your way up, (adding black), until you get a color that satisfies you.  :)  I remember my first attempt was a 50/50 mix and the color still looked black - I couldn't detect the blue.

Best regards,

Chris

I often wish MB hadn't discontinued the original Blueblack (not Midnight Blue).

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I need your help!

Recently, I had the misfortune of falling in love with the colour of Montblanc Blue-Black (Iron Gall) formula. Right. After it was discontinued of course. So I never had a chance to 'horde' bottles.

The Midnight Blue is way different, at least to my eyes. I tried Fuyu-Syogun but nope.

I just love the steel grey/ blue quality of the ink, its shading.

Can you please recommend something similar? I do not care much for its waterproof properties, but that colour is what I am really after.

Any suggestions?

I believe that all Mb have available now is Midnight Blue or Permanent Blue. Neither of these is the same shade as the old Blue-Black

Tas just did a review comparing one od the new KWZI inks to the okd MBMB. If you find out which one, I'm willing to do a CRV and compare the inks.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Unless they do another blue-black, I don't think you'll find something very similar...what about Caran d'Ache blue night?

Check through the KWZI reviews. ..I will do the same when I am back in the office. Lets see which one is the closest. If necessary lets ask KWZI and Tas. Then we can do a comparison.

I have both KWZI 23 and the old MB Midnight Blue (iron gall formula). Will do a comparison later today for you if needed.

Like Sandy1, and others chasing rainbows, I've been looking for a substitute for ages.

No real success though.

I've just bought two of KWZI's stunning blues that are fab to use and look at but if you're after a spot on match, I've yet to find one . . . even when buying the same bottle of ink !

Diamine's Eclpise is an ink that slipped through my net and worth a try, especially as 30ml is only around £3.00.

Best of luck and let us know of your findings.

(I don't recall testing KWZI 23 - sorry)
