Bonne Esperance - L'artisan Pastellier

L'Artisan Pastellier is french ink / calligraphy materials producers. They offer two lines of inks suitable for fountain pens: CALLIFOLIO (inks made for fountain pens, neutral PH and so on) andENCRES CLASSIQUES (not all of them may have perfect properties however I've tried most of them and had no issues in my fountain pens).

L'Artisan Pastellier inks don't get much love or attention here. I understand this as they're not easily obtainable. You may buy them directly from the producer's on-line/stationery boutique. The best thing to do is to organize group buy (I've done it twice last year for polish sountain pen board). It's nice thing to do - you get to meet a lot of people to exchange inks and the shipment cost becomes really friendly.

Bonne Esperance is decent but boring.

Let's just say that if they advertised these as a blue black line - and extolled the differences, I might have been more interested. Alas, they are too similar for me to get excited about.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

There is a reason why they have this many blue inks. The region where L'Artisan Pasteliier is located (South of France around Albin) used to be very famous in the16th until 18th century for its "Pastel". Pastel was made from a plant called "Isatis Tinctoria". It is a blue dye mainly used for colouring textiles. The results were mostly shades of grey/blue to mid-blue. This pastel used be called "the blue gold" and was very important in that era. L'Artisan Pastellier actualy make again "pastel" and the blue colours are also reflected in their range of blue inks. It is a kind of a tribute.

Excellent... Thanks for the history lesson... I do like blue-greys... I just can't imagine how to choose one when they are all very similar... :P

See, that's totally interesting. If they told us about that and explained the differences...oh and had accurate pictures on their website, I might be willing to buy more blues. Sometimes I think I have enough blues, but the feeling goes away when I see another blue.

Oh that happens to you too?

Greens get me every time... except when a purple grabs me first.

This looked better on the website than it does in real life. Thank you for the honest, accurate review.

Very nice ink...

As a Francophile I sort of must chek that artisan

Das leben ist wie ein Perpetuum Mobile mit ein Mangel..... Immer im Bewegung jedoch nicht unendlich. (life is like a troubled Perpetuum Mobile ever moving but not for ever)

Tricked throughout the centuries...

For centuries people had been tricked by kings & "religion-alism"

In the 20th century people got tricked by communism

Today people get tricked by (neo)capitalism :)

My problem exactly.

It's like they made these inks for me, chalky subdued blue blacks and greys, Gorgeous. So. thanks mostly to visvamitra (again) I went to their site and chose three similar blues.

16 Euros for the pouches, 18 EUROS FOR THE POSTAGE.

This is Akkerman all over again.

I kinda like the color. Almost reminiscent of Fukagawa Nezu.

I'm sorry to say but the postage is inevitable. It does sound awfull when you buy ink and the postage costs more then the amount you spend on inks. I do not see how this can be solved unless somebody has a great idea.

I understand postage is inevitable but, call me old fashioned, I'd like my ink to cost more than the postage . . . :(

Well - it's always the best to organise group buy. I've made two group buys of Callifiolio, two group buys of Akkerman and a fellow pen enthusiasts from Poland's organised Noodler's group buy. It allows you to socialize and save the cost :)

Buy more ink, and then your ink costs more than your postage. That's usually how I handle this dilemma.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
