Hi all,
Just getting back into pens and would love to give a stub nib a try, so was hoping some of you could recommend an inexpensive nib I could swap into my Ahab. I saw Goulet is selling some for $15, was hoping there was something cheaper available by now. Also, am I right in assuming the 1.1 is like a fine and the 1.5 a medium, at least on the broad part? Thanks much,

GBB

I think your estimate is way narrow. The broad JoWo nibs that I've had ground to stubs produce about a 0.8mm width.

Check xFountain pens to go really cheap on replacement nibs. The Nemosine nibs are less expensive than Goulet's, narrower and I don't think have as much line variation

I've put a Monteverde 1.1 stub nib on my Ahab. Really lovely smooth nib, one of my favourites.

I think Goulet Pens have them at about $24, I know you wanted cheaper but I think it's worth it.

Getting cheap modern stub nibs is difficult as most stubs are on pens over $100 and tend to do the replacement nibs with the section as well.

Monteverdes are one of the few modern pens under $100 that have stubs as a standard option and replacement nibs don't come with the section.

I got an entire Nemosine pen for $15. Ordered it with the .6mm nib. Corrected some flow issues and it now sits in my Ahab. That said, most people rave about the Goulet nibs.

Knox nibs sold through Xfountainpen.com:  Knox K26 & K36 come in:  Broad, Oblique Broad, & Oblique Broad 2X, but not stubs.  I have a Goulet 1.1 stub which will go on my Monteverde Napa when it arrives.  I have a Goulet #6 on my Ahab and love the way it writes. I am considering a #6 Goulet 1.1 or 1.5 stub for my new Noodler's Konrad Ebonite.  I believe that the price for the Goulet nib at $15 is very reasonable.  The Goulet nibs are really smooth.  Is your Ahab the only FP you have at this point?

I have both Nemosine italics (.6 and .8mm) but they are not stubs. They write very smoothly with nice variation, though. I've also got a 1.1mm Monteverde stub which has significantly less variation. I'd presume the same with a Goulet or any other stub if that's what you're looking for. Cheaper than $15 I don't know of any stub nib except for a M or B that you could try your hand at making into a stub.

Here's an example of what I have. The Noodler's is just a standard $2 nib that I re-ground. The 1.1mm stub was dipped so it is not a great example.

I have three Goulet 1.1mm stubs (two 'chrome' coloured, one two-tone) - all of them currently housed in Jinhao pens at present, but they'll fit snugly in a Noodler's pen too.  I can't speak for the Nemosine, Knox or Monteverde alternatives, but the Goulet nibs are great.
