What Was Your First Lamy?

As everybody has said before, same here. My first Lamy was a Charcoal Safari with a Fine Nib, what a lovely pen.

Such a workhouse, I still use it to this day, hmm..

Also my first fountain pen and my introduction to Lamy. Very reliable and still use it often too. Has led to several more Lamy purchases as well.

An Al Star. Still my only Lamy, have considered getting another though at some point.

I tried out a Safari as my first Lamy. I didn't like the grip. Which is strange because I DO like the grip on the Sheaffer Prelude. In any case, I ended up giving the Safari away and avoiding Lamy for quite a time.

Then I discovered the studio and the 2000. I also have the 2000 ballpoint and pencil. Oh how quickly we get sucked in.

My first Lamy was a 25-30, bought on a flea market in 2011. It has a gold EF nib and is piston-filled. The nib was bended and I suppose it was standing on the vendor's desk for centuries. After a quick cleaning and nib straightening (one of the first repairs I made), is now one of my favorites.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my vista and safari on the same day, so either/both! Though I think I favor the vista.

My first ever Lamy was a Savannah Green safari with my name engraved on the barrel. It was a gift from my dad, who was a fountain pen enthusiast himself. I used it for note making, assignments (yes we could submit handwritten assignments in my day!) and exams. I have lost the pen now but have bought more Safaris in memory of my dad whom I miss so much!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
