A Portrait, Perhaps

Hello

trying to understand why I joined this network, trying to understand myself I guess.

Here's a little try:

I was born in Transylvania, Romania and besides the ordinary language and math courses we also had calligraphy, and that meant writing long texts on lined paper. The meaning was to make our hand writing beautiful for this was an age everything was written by hand. I hate it but I also became the pupil the teachers asks to write their ...whatever they had to write, just because I had the nicest hand style. Not bragging, just saying that practice helps :)

My first pen was a Chinese one which I still have and like.

We didn't have much choices , but I loved to write.

Then I learned to love computers (about 1994) and I became art director for an art magazine. I did everything on my old computer with very very little RAM (talking MB here and not many of them) and I loved every single second of it but the best part was when I got the first issue and I smelled it. I was happy.

I don't have many pens, only 3, and I of course wish I had money to buy the beautiful pens I've seen on internet. But for me , though I love the small ink flacons and the form of almost every pen (not saying anything about paper because I might bore you with my obsession) the part that gives me most joy is to actually write something. And if what I write makes someone happy it is even better.

I like new technology a lot but I can't describe the feeling of getting a letter in an envelope with a stamp on it. Maybe I am a romantic deep down (which I won't admit, never ever) but the first thing I do when I travel is to buy postcards and send them. Even if I use mail, sms, twitter and everything that's on line I have a special love for doing stuff that takes time, I find waiting for a hand written letter exciting.

hmm, don't want to see you all falling asleep so I'll end here

Welcome, Animis !

You know the happiness of receiving a handwritten letter.

You know the satisfaction of writing a letter.

Write with joy.

It's the desire to pass along that feeling that I find the best motivator. Welcome!

That's quite a change, from Transylvania to Sweden...Any good penshops there?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
