  1. 1. How many fountain pens do you carry with you each day?

    • 0-1 I don't like to show off.
    • 2-3 I like different colors....blue, blue-black and black.
    • 4+ Hey, who borrowed my pen??
    • I have a small mobile 'desk' I drag around just in case.
    • Fountain pens are great weapons and my choice for self-defense.
    • I need ink!
    • I don't need no stinkin' fountain pen.....well, not ALL the time...
  2. 2. Do you only use fountain pens at home/office/school or do you have one with you most of the time?

    • Only home/work/school.
    • Always have one in my pocket/purse...or within reach.
  3. 3. Do you have a supply of ink with you for that pen??

My Kaweco Sport is always in my pants pocket, although I find I don't use it that much. I carry two Lamy Al-Stars in my work bag that see most of the action.

I have been retired a goodly number of years now and to keep my deal with my wife, I spend 3 or 4 days of the week out of the house in the late morning-early afternoon period. I like to do some basic research and current events journaling at Starbucks, B&N, Boston Stoker, our local Christian bookstore or any other place that will put up with a coffee drinking journal writing guest. To that end I carry 3 Fps, appropriate journals and research material (usually a MacBook Air). I rotate the pens, but my favorite combination is a MB 149, a MB 1996 Writer's Edition and a Lamy 2000. The pens have to be easy to write with over a long period and hold a goodly amount of ink. The computer is not to take notes on, but is to provide data to write about.

When I worked in an office I used to carry a VP in my aloha shirt pocket. Most days of the last couple of years have been "jeans day" so I carry a hardy aluminum Al-Star in a 2-pen scabbard on my belt. That has worn a hole in it. I'm going to make another one out of denim as soon as I learn to sew.

I've also cut down my supply of 47 inks to 3 main inks and 3 more I couldn't cut for sentimental reasons. But for the last six months, I've used only two inks: Platinum Pigment Blue, and Sailor Kiwa Guro black. Although both inks are well behaved, pens get an ultrasonic cleaner bath every few months.

I always carry a pencil case with me which contains my two Onoto Magna Classics, some pencils and some highlighters.

My pens are never far away from me, ditto a notebook or two.

I always carry one pen, and usually two. I like one pen inked in a writing ink like Noodler's Black. I also like one ink for correcting papers or highlighting.

I keep a small sample vial of Noodler's Black on my desk at school. There is also currently a bottle of Pelikan Edelstein Turmaline, an ink I'm trying to use up for correcting.

I always carry my Twsbi Mini with me. Holds lots of ink, don't need a bottle of such with me. The rest tend to stay at home, or only come with me when I have a specific need. Now, that might change as I acquire more pens, but generally I prefer to keep the clutter down.

This I what I carry now a days:

- Pilot VP F - Noodler's LE

- Jinhao X450 M Jowo - Diamine BlueBlack Registrars

- Jinhao X750 B Jowo - Noodler's Blue Ghost

- Jinhao X750 1.1 Stub Jowo - Diamine BlueBlack Registrars

- Pilot Justus95 SF - Pilot Kon-peki

- Wancher Platinum PTL-5000 F/EF - Platinum Carbon Black

- Lamy Al star M - Noodler's Black

- TWSBI Vac 700 EF - Sheaffer Skrip Peacock Blue

The Lamy is my borrow pen as in if somebody needed a pen I'll toss them a Lamy. I hate the Alstar to a point I won't care if that gets broken or stolen. And I do use all of those pens throughout my day I do rotations so one pen doesn't really run out of ink.

This is in my pants all the time, I have a few more in my bag.

I usually have two pens inked at any time, and they go in my shirt pocket. I am getting rid of shirts without pockets. :)

Usually one of them is blue or black or some other "appropriate" color, and the other pen can be anything.

Today it's a Flighter 51 with Namiki Blue, and a Sheaffer Imperial 440 with Diamine Syrah. Both are low, and will be cleaned and something new used when they run out.

If I run out during the day, I just use the other pen. Both have never run out at the same day.

I always carry at least one pen, even if it's just for quick errands. But when I'm actually away from home, I carry my whole sketch kit, which has between 8 and 16 pens, depending on what I'm using and how many colors I need for my artwork and writing/editing/notes. I don't carry extra ink with me, because I have 99% bottles (and that would just be inconvenient), and I'm never gone long enough to fully empty a pen. And a sketchbook/notebook of course!

I usually carry one pen, either in a shirt pocket or in the car.

My EDC pens are either a cedar blue Vac 51 or a teal aero 51, but once in awhile, I carry a third generation green Vac junior.

All the EDC pens have extrafine nibs because for some reason 99% of the paper I end up writing on isn´t FP friendly.

The ´good´ pens live in the briefcase. :)

One in my shirt breast pocket chosen to fit into said pocket, and to compliment my clothing choices for the day. Three in a leather pen case stowed in my regular satchel with several notebooks.

I generally have anywhere between 2 and 5 pens with me, all inked with different colors. (I voted "4+", but it actually varies).

Yes, use them all the time.

I voted "yes" on the third question, but truthfully, the poll should have had "sometimes" as an option.

I usually carry around four, which is quite a bit fewer than I carried around when I used rollerballs and gel pens. I like having color options and being confident I won't run out of ink.

Hey, Tex !

You and I know that a fountain pen is a poor instrument of self-defense.

I have a 5-pen soft case that I keep in my briefcase. I use the pens at home and work, and take the case and paper with my on certain trips where I'll have the time to do some writing. Never travel with ink, as 5 pens are sufficient.

Always carry an eyedropper filled pocket pen with Fude nib (holds loads of ink & nib is versatile enough for up to 5 different line thickness(es)

What else would I need?

Good thread.

I should scale back. I take way more to work than I need.

I'm going to pare it down to:

One red (not 3...)

One green (I actually had four different greens on the go at one point, which is frankly stupid)

One blue/black, green/black or black

One blue (which will always be my Vac 700 with BSB - I can't get into any other blues)

One wildcard - whatever else I fancy taking with me

So, on Monday, my first rotation will be:

Pelikan Souveran M600 with Edelstein Ruby

Platinum Plaisir with J. Herbin Lierre Sauvage

Cross Apogee with Diamine Quartz Black

See above

TWSBI Diamond Mini with Cult Pens Deep Dark Orange

I pretty much failed on that then. Yesterday, however, I cleaned out all my pens that use bottled ink and managed to get it down to 8. I'm aiming for 5 eventually, but I have 3 pens with cartridges in at the moment and I don't like wasting ink. When they run out, I'll get it down to 4 bottled ink pens and 1 cartridge pen.

Two Omas Ogivas, one inked with MB Irish Green and the other with Herbin Perle Noire.Of course a French made Parker Vacumatic Maxima inked in MB Bordeaux

Same thing as usual

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
