Montblanc 146 And 644, Brothers In Green

I've been lucky enough to inherit this from my grand father's collection. They're not in the best of conditions. They have dried ink in them and they've been unused for at least 20 years.

The 146 has discolourations to the plating on the nib and some ink seems hard stuck on it (which is refusing to budge), however after some cleaning the pen is functional.

The 644 brass ring is discoloured and the nib seems to have some flex, its a fine nib so I wonder if this was normal.

The stars on both pens are discoloured to a yellow/brownish hue. Both pens seem finicky with ink and work with my Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite ink

BUT, no matter both pens have such a presence its hard for any modern pen to match, especially the 146, I can't explain it but it just feels.......powerful, it has nothing to do with the size, my daily carry is a Lamy 2000, but you just don't get the same feeling when you open the Lamy or hold it in your hand ( please note I have nothing against the 2000, overall it is my favourite pen)

(Please forgive the yellowish tint to the images, weather is terrible today and can't use natural light for the photos)

What wonderful pens!

To me, the tarnish and discolouration, give them extra character...as an inheritance, they are priceless.

Great pens! If you haven't already, take the time to have them properly restored. That way, your grandkids will be posting the same kind of topic to this forum in about 70-odd years! ;)

Wow those are gorgeous man...

I repeat my previous comment... all of you have the best luck and the best families. I've never been given vintage montblancs... My family is a disappointment!

@farmdogfan, gmax, mallymal1 thanks guys :)

@JLS1 Yes I should, haven't found someone who I'd trust with it yet in London yet. Will take them to the Pen show in october and see if I come across someone.

@TLMG Thanks, your comment was hilarious :) I'm glad I got these, I remember my granddad had about 10 odd Montblancs from the 50's/60's no clue what became of them, his collection was quite awesome and he got me hooked onto pens when I was much younger.

You might want to try FPN member Eckiethump - AFAIK, he's a nibmeister/restorer in the UK who's worked with vintage MBs before. Otherwise, I would send them to Frances Goosens (Belgium) /Max Schrage (Germany).

The ambering on the stars makes them that much more beautiful!

I'll give that a shot. Post pics once I get them done. Thanks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
