Great review! Turmaline got my attention, most of because I really like the bottle of this ink... but its a nice color too.

It's even prettier in person.

--- I inked up Tanzanite today in a TWSBI 540 with a Pendleton Nib. It's very pretty. It has more purple than you might expect and less purple than I expected.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Onyx and Mandarin. I don't mind the Onyx; it's nothing particularly special but I find it a little hard to get excited about black inks. The Mandarin experience is just like the OP's - a huge disappointment. It is so flat and boring and the behaviour means it simply is not worth the price and the fancy bottle.

I have had similar conclusions, Topaz, Tanzanite and Turmaline have their charms, each perform quite nicely and have quite distinct personalities. I share your disappointment with some of the others that I have tried. I would sum up the series as inconsitant across the range. With Iroshizuku inks shipped from Japan through sellers on Amazon at similar prices I think Edelstein inks struggle to be good value in comparison. I will be buying more Topaz though :)

I genuinely dislike Garnet. I find this ink boring, uninteresting and nor worth the money. Sorry :)

It looks like you're getting no shading at all from it, whereas my bottle shades a ton. Interesting.

OOPS, I meant, Tanzanite the FPN user, has had the Edelstein inks fade in her notebooks.

Perhaps I should have chosen another alias :D

The fading I have shown in thd thread mentioned above was not in a notebook. It was on a paper on a tabld not exposed to sun. I will see what happens with the inks in my notebooks over time.

I hadn't seen this review before. Very thoroughly done. I have yet to try any of the Edelstein inks but was thinking of doing a mass sampling from the Goulet's. Good to know what to look for in advance. Thanks!

Topaz and Tanzanite are near perfect examples of bright blue and blue black, respectively, but I agree with you about the rest of the line.

Topaz, especially, is a near perfect ink. I think it outshines Kon-Peki considerably, but gets way less love, here.

I agree with you about Topaz. On Canson tracing paper, it even shows just the slightest hint of pinky-red sheen at the edges. It's a very fine ink. My second choice of the Edelstein line is Turmaline, which constantly surprises me with its complexity and excellent shading.

I just ordered my first Edelstein ink: Topaz. I am a little dismayed that Murky said that it stains, I had read that before. The other colors do not appeal to me.

Topaz is stunning, looks like a more saturated version of the 4001 turquoise which is another one of my favorites. Amazing review!

I have 2 Edelstein inks. Aventurine was a gift, and I bought Amber.

The Amber has shading, and the Aventurine is a good green.

I got a new Phileas in Amazon Green and was considering buying a new green ink for it. I may stick with the Aventurine. Not sure yet.

Oh, based on my two inks, I'd vote for Aventurine. But I haven't cast a vote yet.

Fantastic ink review - Many Thanks for all the work you put into it I thoroughly enjoyed viewing & reading it.

Tanzanite is the only one I have at the moment - it's good, and growing on me. After this review I may just give Topaz a go to complement my current favourite brighter blues - Diamine China Blue & Watermans Inspired Blue ('old' South Seas?) .... and the Diamine Steel Blue that just flows off my M200 like silk (another ink that I chose in "error" but have grown to love over time)

Enjoyed this review. I was interested in Edelstein, now I know what I am interested in getting a sample of in terms of color Turmaline.

Agreed that Topaz is the best of the line.

But, as it is really a tarted up 4001 Blue-Black, is having more saturation and a little bit of sheen (on good paper only) worth paying 400% more for over regular Blue-Black?

Thanks for the reviews, and the pictures in particular. When I got my Pelikan P200, it came with an Edelstein ink cartridge. (I'm not sure what color though; does anyone know?) I already had some short 4001 cartridges, but thought that it might be good to try Edelstein ink since the pen was shipping with that. I'm glad I found the color samples here and elsewhere, because they helped me choose my color. I prefer blue inks, so I was really only looking at three colors: Sapphire (blue), Topaz (turquoise-blue), and Tanzanite (blue-black). Thanks to images like these, I saw that, for my tastes, Sapphire leaned too purple and Tanzanite leaned too black, so I chose Topaz. It's a rather different color than all the other blue inks I have, almost looking like a blue-green compared to them, but it's a nice color, and I think this is better for me than the purplish Sapphire or blackish Tanzanite. I think the Edelstein inks are more expensive than the 4001 inks though, and I'm not sure I like the color enough to want to pay extra for them when the writing quality doesn't seem dramatically different. But I do intend to use the ink I've already got.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
