One of my favorite Esterbrook items to collect are the Dip-Less desk sets. For some reason, I just think these are just too cool. My goal in life is to get one of each, and that is no small goal. I've got 17 (including 5 doubles) and that's just scratching the surface, considering there are different UK variants as well.

 

For this topic, I consider one of the most common sets, and it's cousin. Most people are familiar with the look of 407 dip-less set. You see them on ebay all the time:

What some people don't know is Esterbrook actually made a scaled down, less deco version called the 404:

Here's where I propose a question for those who have both a 404 and a 407/427 (the double). I received my 404 without the metal clip. The one you see here is from a 427. I imagine since they are the same design and were offered at the same time they would be the exact same part. But, being a purist, I cannot rest easy until I know for sure. Can anyone tell me if the two clips are indeed the same?

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
