Garnet - Pelikan Edelstein Ink Of The Year 2014

I love Pelikan Edelstein bottles. They're nice and stylish. However I find the inks overrated. Many people tend to believe that they're amazing just because they're priced as premium brand and have amazing package. I've almost finished comparison of Edelstein line and I'll post it next weak.

Anyway GARNET is, for me, huge disappointment. I've finished geology / geochemistry and mineralogy studies. I don't work in this field however I still enjoy crystals and garnets are among most intriguing ones. I was expecting to get complex and deep red color. However what I received is boring, generic red ink without any magic to it. It's not bad. It's just not special. And for the price I expect something special.

To bring out the magic try it in a wet pen like the Ahab below

I went back to a couple of pages I had written in the 1.1 nib and found that I really liked them. Don't know if it is the page or me that has aged :) But try it and you might like it.

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

I agree with the OP. I have a bottle of this ink. I'm glad I didn't pay the high price for it (it was free with a pen purchase) because it really is a disappointing ink. A drab, uninspiring colour with little to commend it. It even looks dull from my very wet Aurora 88.

I've been quite underwhelmed by the Edelstein series. I agree with the OP in general, though I haven't tried this particular color.

Thank you for the review. I'm glad that I've seen this thread.

Only ordered the international long cart set of this colour.

Will give it a try with a 1.1 italic.

Thanks for the review.

I find Pelikan inks are more suitable to be used in their own pens, which write wet. I've been looking for the Garnet locally, still nothing.

Have you noticed any fading of the ink? I received a sample in a visconti traveling inkpot that was encased in a leather sleeve and then kept inside luggage. It should have received next to no regular light, but it was traveling and may have been X-rayed multiple times. The ink looks orange now. I thought it was mislabeled until I looked at how your samples look when wet. That's some yellow/orange dyel.

So.... any changes in the ink?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Well - finally I haven't made fading test - my flat isn't really well situated (SE site of elevated building, first floor, mostly shadow :) ) . I disliked this ink from the first try so aftyer using a sample I've never came back to it nor given it second chance.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
