Retrofitting A Coin-Filler Onto A Bastardized Blow Filler...

I just bought(has not arrived yet) a bastardized waterman's crusader from a fellow FPNer(lahlahlaw) with a blow-fill hero 616 barrel. I was thinking while it is pretty awesome, making it a coin-filler and blow filler would make it even cooler. As far as i know all i need to do is put a j/pressure-bar to put in the barrel and to cut the slit, how do i find the bar, and is it economical/practical to do this? This is the pen(courtesy lahlahlaw)post-110974-0-16764600-1406754560_thumb.jpg

I think it would be pretty easy to do. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, I would consider using a junk credit card as a j-bar. Just cut it to width and length, heat it in hot water to bend it, and install! I think that the main concerns with this design would be getting rid of any sharp/hard edges on the plastic to prevent puncturing the sac... Let us know how it turns out!

Would teflon tape attached to the bar with elec. tape and threaded into the screws work?

I don't know, since I've never done it before, but it's pretty low risk, so you could always try it.

My friend Kidde turned me on to fashioning them from a girl's Hair barette. Cheap source of spring steel available from any drug or grocery. Large assortment of sizes.

The J-Bar should stay where it's put from its own pressure against the inside of the barrel; if it's rolling, then it needs more tension (but not too much, because that's bad for the barrel). Fountainpensacs.com and woodbin.ca both carry the slightly more efficient 2-part bars, if you're not set on fabrication.

I'm having a little trouble picturing something that's a blow-filler and a coin-filler at once-- the slot in the side will let the air out that one forces in at the rear. I can see keeping a finger over the slot for blowing, but that finger will almost certainly end up in contact with an inky part of the bottle. This may be a failure of imagination on my part....

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

I have some waxy clay that i was going to use for a short term seal for filling, but i might do something else. Is the shipping on those bars included with the price?

After seeing that, I think coin-fillers are underestimated. Nice Job,lahlahlaw!

Thanks!! It's my first. I agree they're underrated. It's a very good way to save a lever filler with a busted lever.

For those interested in how I did it, I used an old J bar that had the curved part broken off. I shorted it and smoothed out the edges with a Dremel. Then I got a pencil eraser and cut a slit into it for the (now) pressure bar to fit into. Then I used a cutting disc on the Dremel to cut the slot into the barrel. There's really nothing to it, the slot cutting is where things can get tricky, my advice is to work slowly. The Waterman section is shellacked into the Hero barrel.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
