Cartridges And Converter For Sheaffer Targa?

T4TEXAS

I have an older Sheaffer Targa with the original black metal body, not the re-issue. Will this pen take a modern Sheaffer carrtidge and converter, or do I need something else?.

If it is the full-sized Targa, then it will take standard Sheaffer cartridges and the current Sheaffer piston converter. However, if it is the Slim Targa that's a whole different situation. The slim converters and cartridges both went out of production somewhere between 1998 and 2000 and it is very difficult to find them today. Cartridges, if found, are dried up but can be cleaned and refilled. If you don't know which model you have, post a photo of the pen showing the complete nib section and we can help you identify it.

Thanks. I am fairly sure it is not a slim model. I'll go ahead and get a new converter. I have another issue with this pen that I'll post in a new topic when I can supply a pic.

This probably won't be the case, but every once in a great while there is a Targa fountain pen that was originally a roller ball. If this is the case there may be a small spring in the end of the barrel that will prevent the barrel from being screwed all the way down with a piston converter installed. It's pretty easy to remove the spring. A crochet hook is a good tool to fish it out. Or a paper clip straightened out and then bent with a small hook in one end. Or even a wood dowel of the right size. Any of these things will dislodge the spring and bring it out. Once that's done the converter will fit with no problems.

The spring does not interfere with cartridges or with the older press-bar converter.

I posted this in another thread. Sheaffer has never had a "reissue" of the Targa, making the same pen with a few design changes over a couple of decades. But as Bill noted, there is the slim Targa. Identification is easy if you've ever seen the two sizes. But a simple way to tell which you have is by the clutch ring and edge of the section. A standard Targa always has a raised clutch ring and the end of the black part of the section before the metal threads is raised. The slim Targa always has a flat clutch ring, and it's the same diameter all of the way to where the black plastic ends.

A standard Targa will take any Sheaffer converter. The slim Targa, as Bill noted, uses a slim converter or a slim cartridge. They're nearly impossible to find. Sheaffer was supplying the Montiverdi mini converter as replacements for the slim converter (also used in the thin Fashion pen and TRZ fountain pen). They're not great, but work. You can also make one by cutting down an insulin syringe, cutting the nipple on the end shorter and opening up the end with a #41 drill for a snug, but not tight, fit on the piercing tube.

Sheaffer has never had a "reissue" of the Targa, making the same pen with a few design changes over a couple of decades.

As per http://www.sheaffertarga.com there have been at least 5 technical revisions and a number of models have been 'revisited', for example the 1001XG (brushed steel with gold trim) has two different 'generations', one in technical revision 1 (black band at end of barrel, flush connection between cap and barrel, brushed steel finial on cap) and one in technical revision 5 (a band between barrel and cap, heavier, shiny finial on cap, no black band at end of barrel, etc). In that respect the term 'reissue' is accurate I would think. The example pens are only different in the details.

But not since production was discontinued more than a decade ago. Those are only design changes or revisions of a model that was still in production, not a reissue. When we were in the Sheaffer service center before it closed in 2008 we were told that Sheaffer had no intention of reviving the Targa, and they never did. Now that Cross owns the brand, I think its even less likely.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
