Another Bayard from the awesome ebay seller, amateur25--André Rocca.

I thought the pen would be more mauve as my laptop screen (on my dying Mac) depicted the pen this way, but instead, the pen is a lovely golden brown and I am just in love with it. The nib is super flex and I inked it with Iroshizuku yama-budo and used Tomoe River paper for the sample. The imprint on the barrel reads Excelsior 551 and at the end of the pen, there is the number 62 in a box. The nib reads Warranted, 18 ct, 1st Quality.

The books used in the shoot are Nijinsky: An Illustrated Monograph edited by Paul Magriel and published by Henry Holt and Company, New York (1947) and the 1920 version of A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales for Girls and Boys by Nathaniel Hawthorne with pictures by Maxfield Parrish (Duffield and Company, New York).

Thanks for looking!

Hey D.ick. Thank you very much. Let's see. My Bayards are as follows:

Excelsior 551/62(candy-striped golden brown)

Excelsior 560 (red, black and grey)

Superstyl 650 (mosaic-like silvery grey with gold flecks)

black Excelsior with 62 at end of barrel

black Superstyl

Red Ripple with silver dragonfly clip

Red Ripple with silver clip

black Fit with hooded nib

black Fit with regular nib

Safety

black Niveauclair

black and blue LE 4

green, brown and black LE 8

black 715

green Superstyl (?) 656 on its way to me

I think that's it. ;)

Thank you, Ghost Plane. I am drawn to the patterning and the colors. The nib is pretty nice as well but my all time favorite is the Red Ripple with dragonfly clip. ;)

Beauty of a pen! How do you find these? I am amazed and impressed.

Thanks so much. I buy most of my Bayards from sellers in France and Belgium. Only one came from the U.S. from a guy in Texas.

That dragonfly clip is hard to beat

Agreed. It's always going to be my grail pen, I think. ;)

Isn't a grail something desired but unobtainable??

Not necessarily although one does think of the Holy Grail, which was purportedly found earlier this year, I believe. It can just be a much sought after object, something invested with the power of the Holy Grail. Also, I'd mentioned in the Red Ripple with silver dragonfly clip thread that I believed it was my grail pen but a pen that I didn't know was my grail until I saw it, which is rather backwards. Still, if I had to dispense of all of my pens and keep only one, it would be that pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
