Introduction, And A Question On Inks

Hi, I am new here (which is the reason why I am posting on this forum), and a group of my friends got exasperated with my clicking habits (I tend to click the pen repeatedly when bored, I used a lot of g2's), and bought me a nice kaweico AL sport, in black. I am actually heading out tomorrow to buy a pilot capless (vanishing point in america?). I do not intend to give my friends any mercy with my clicking habits, but I fell in love with fountain pens the moment I tried mine for the first time (I had adamantly refused tooo try due to me not wanting to spend that much on a pen, knowing I probably would if I tried), and after trying it, I have carried mine around every single moment, upon finding it to be a great conversation starter. I live in singapore, my question is, which ink/s should I get for my capless, as I have heard of it being dry or the capillaries emptying quickly? I would however mention that as far as I can find, the only inks I can get here are of the following brands: Graf Von Faber Castell. Caran D'ache, Platinum, Pilot, Namiki, Noodler, Sailor, and Private Reserve. I look forward to your knowledgeable replies, and cannot wait to wake up tomorrow morning.

Welcome! You live in Singapore, but you're not from Singapore, right? :)

I am too new myself to make a recommendation, but my guess is that it would help if you stated what kind of inks you have in mind, e.g., would you like your ink to be waterproof, what colours you have in mind, what is your budget, that sort of thing.

There is excellent advice on inks and inky problems on Richard Binder's website: http://www.richardspens.com

Look in the reference section at "Taking Care of Your Pens" and then "Inks: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".

Lots of other very useful information on his site as well.

Also, you could advice specifically for the Pilot vanishing point from John Mottishaw on nibs.com. John sells the Pilot pens and is a very expert source of advice.

Hi and welcome to FPN

I can't answer your questions on inks in the VP/Capless. I'm not an ink-person, I have a few good inks and that's enough...

Besides I DO have a VP but I dislike it, so I hardly use it.

I hope you will like yours better than I do mine.

And enjoy the forum

Welcome !

We should visit a forum of annoying habits. You are a pen clicker. I have a long list of such habits.

I have cured the worse ones. Otherwise, I couldn't live near other people. :lticaptd:

It is okay to abuse gel pens. Don't abuse your fountain pens, please.

Welcome!

I have a capless and I haven't had any issues with the inks I've used in it (Noodler's Blue, Montblanc Black, Diamine Oxblood). If you want to play it safe, you can use Pilot/Namiki ink, but I don't recall anyone posting here about inky issues with the capless (aka vanishing point).

Thanks iahlahlaw, I can always wait a few seconds or get some new ink. And Sasha royale, I know how you feel, except for the most part, I live my life alone, or with my friends, who are used to my quirks. And I am buying it to see their faces of despair when their investment in my silence didn't work out (especially as they can't steal an expensive fountain pen with good conscience unlike my g2 army). I will try not to click it too many times. And to everyone else, thanks, I am happy to be here

Welcome mialslsoala! You will no doubt find tons of useful information here about inks, pens and all sorts of things including pen repairs contributed by these amazing people on FPN. I suggest you start with a colour in mind or even a brand and explore it within the "Ink Reviews" section where many members have posted loads of information about drying times, waterproofness etc.

Happy fountain penning!

PS. I did see a YouTube video of the Pilot capless and the reviewer was complaining about how the clicking mechanism is especially loud - she always gets looks at board meetings when she clicks her pen to write something down. So your friends will no doubt be delighted by your new acquisition :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
