Oranje Boven - Akkerman

Hi, I'd like to present you another review that I've made for polish fountain pen forum - that's why the text is not written in english. I'd love to prepare new scans (in english this time) but I don't have time. Anyway, I hope at least some of you will find it useful even tough you won't - probably - understand the text as polish is not the most popular language to learn :)

Oranje Boven is quite nice. It would be really great if the shading was present. Unhappily it shows up only in extremly wet writers and even then it's not really interesting.

Perhaps interesting to know:

Oranje is the family name of the Dutch Royal family. One of the ancestors was the prince of Orange (in France), among other titles.

Oranje boven would translate as Orange for ever, or Up with Orange, Orange on top. (boven = up, on top)

I loved this ink, but it fades very fast.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

@RMN - thank you for this information, I like to know this kind of stuff.

Can you tell me something about Hopjesbruin and Bekakt Haags names? I like these two a lot and would like to get some additional info :)

Hopjes are a brown coloured Coffee-flavoured sweet. They are called Haagse Hopjes, (Hopjes from the Hague)

All these inks have names pointing at certain aspects of the Hague as our seat of Government and residence of our (then) Queeen, and (now) King.

Bekakt is a word used for Posh, snobbish.

Haagse kak, Bekakt Haags is about the snobbishness of some of the people living in this city.

Kak is also a slangword for poo. hence the brownish colour.

By the way, there is a topic somewhere in the inkforum explaining several other Akkerman ink-names. Can't remember the author, now. Topic started about January 2014 or thereabouts.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
