Go for uniform letter height, your letters get smaller towards the end of words.

should the hand also move horizontally towards the left as we write a word or it is supposed to remain on same spot and only fingers should be adjusted to complete the word?

you are right my letters are getting smaller

Your "needs improvement" penmanship far outshines mine. It looks really good to me...keep up the good work.

Yes, move the hand, otherwise the movement is limited to the fingers and you are drawing more than writing. It's hard to get freedom of movement as it involves re-learning muscle movement and using muscles in the arm more and hand less. This is what I struggle most with, after years of writing just with the hand I'm learning to use the arm and it's weird at first; but like with all things it's about practice.

Also consider what style and purpose you need to improve for. Your current handwriting is written slowly but looks good, however if you want your handwriting to be fast and attractive at the same time you'll need to practice letter formations.

The classic Spencerian workbooks are a useful tool.

People who write Spencerian or Copperplate (round hand) typically slide the paper with the non-writing hand every few characters. This maintains the relationship between eye and hand. People writing formal Italic do this, as well, for the same reason. Writers of cursive italic typically do slide their hands down the writing line. Spencerian cannot be written successfully unless the hand is free to move in all directions.

As a general note, your hand should never be so anchored to the page that either the hand or page can't be repositioned without breaking rhythm.

The liberty of the press is indeed essential to the nature of a free state; but this consists in laying no previous restraints upon publications, and not in freedom from censure for criminal matter when published. Every freeman has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public; to forbid this, is to destroy the freedom of the press; but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity. you are right sir.there is no rhythm right now.

i have to stop in the middle of the word sometimes to determine how to introduce the next letter and it causes the ink to spread as i do not lift pen during that pause.

i am new to calligraphy and i will consider your advice as i proceed.

thanks a lot.

this a practice sheet from today.

i have left the stub nib pen

previously as @proton007 had said i was writing slowly and applying more pressure on paper

i am trying not to write too slowly now

cause while slowing down pressure also increases

I find your letter forms are consistent, but you need to work on improving those forms, and the overall flow of the hand.

I know you want to learn Copperplate, however, you also need to practice movements (hand and arm) to gain flow and consistency. Use the iampeth website http://www.iampeth.com/lessons.php and choose a style to practice. Once you've acquired the correct movements, it's easier to write fast and flowing cursive, as well as pick up Copperplate.

Just curious, but wondering why you use "i" instead of "I" for the personal pronoun. Being old-school, this really made me stop each time I came to it, as if I were stubbing my toe on something. Prevented a smooth reading otherwise. Also, your lowercase letters are over half the height of your line spacing, which decreases the height difference in the capitals and lower case. Don't worry, I am learning, too! Perhaps someone can enlighten me. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
