My ideal pen would probably be a Lamy 2K deskpen. I think I found the next best thing....

Lamy 99s I hope it works!! 25$... :-D

Nice! I think I know where you got it. Have you turned up a Lamy desk set base?

No base yet. But I will wait that I go back home before having the pen shipped (I am near the end of a six months vacation), so this will have to wait. And I want to see if the pen actually works first.

OK. Wow, a six-month vacation... do you remember how to do your job? :D After six months away, there's a chance that I wouldn't.

Karl's page said the 99s should fit a Parker 45/51 base.

I tested my 99s in 4 different Parker bases, and it only fit snug in 1 of the 4 bases. The different holders a just a tiny bit different, and that makes the difference between fit and loose. While the pen profiles look similar (P51 and 99s), I did not do a careful compare of the pen profiles to see where the difference was, but obviously the 99s is a tiny bit smaller than the Parker 51.

BTW, a Lamy Joy also makes a good desk pen, but without a base. And it has the advantage of being able to easily change nibs to any of the nibs that the Safari takes, from XF to B and 1.1, 1.5 & 1.9 stub italic. I have a Joy with a 1.1 nib, and I LIKE it.

Not a chance! All the more because what I am doing during this vacation is not far from my job. But it's so fortunate to have this kind of opportunity, just to stop and having to job related obligations... :-)

Precious info, thank you so much! I am familiar with the Safari, but never tried a Joy. I suspect the grip would be a problem. As for the base: I still don't know what I will do, but it's likely I will be looking for it in antiques store. I might also try and see if a L2K might be kind of a fit for the pen. Edited by Namo

The grip of the Joy is virtually the same as the Safari, so if you do not like the grip of the Safari, you won't like the Joy.

Think of the Joy as a Safari with a longer tapered barrel/body.

FYI, the Joy is the same length as my Parker 51 desk pen.

You can find bases for P21,45,51 on eBay. But as I mentioned, the problem is that the holders are just a tiny bit different between the one that fit and the ones that are loose. I will take a look at my bases again, to see if I can ID something about the holder that fit vs. the other holders that did not. Take the 99s with you to the stores to check the fit of the holder.

Thanks for the info. I really love the Safari, I have one green lime that I am using with a generous gold nib. But the grip doesn't work for me and the pen is too light for my taste - my daily is a Lamy 2000 steel with a makrolone cap.

Pen base: I'll see what I will do about that, but if the pen feels right to my hand, it may not stay sitting on my desk only. So I might have to find a cap first. Hey, I kind of like looking for that kind of stuff, and since I do have a couple of other pens I love to use, I will be in no hurry at all. Maybe I can Fons a nice vintage base on Bakelit. That would be nice!

Well your first target is to look for a Parker 21/45/51 base.

Then test for fit.

- It should be a friction fit of the pen into the holder.

Be careful, I have a holder where the pen drops down onto the nib, way too loose.

So don't just drop the pen into the holder. On the off chance that you might have an oversize holder, you don't want to damage the nib.

gud luk in your hunt for a base.

  • 1 month later...

The original base is nearly impossible to find. But the Lamy cube fits also.

Pense received. Tunes put to be a frankenpen frp. A 99s and a 99e. A piece of the piston was missing. Fortunately, it's 2k compatible so I did have the necessary spare. The cap of an old Parker 45 is a nice fit until I can fond a deskbase. The nib is amazing, even if it's not to OM the engravent on the barrel announces :'(

Too bad it isn't a 26P.

I have an OB nib that I pulled from the pen (its someplace in this room), cuz I just could not get the hang of writing with that nib.

I replaced it with a F nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
