Hello hello.

I have been a lover of pens and notebooks for many years, but I've always been... on a very limited budget. I've tried the cheap fountain pen / calligraphy sets in the past and was always disappointed. It lead me to believe that maybe I just didn't have the patience for them...

Well, I've yearned enough and I finally bought a Jinhao X750 from Goulet Pens last week. I figured it was inexpensive enough that I wouldn't be angry at myself if I didn't like it...

... turns out, I love it. I'm already planning my next purchase. I'm just going to edge my way up the cost ladder slowly. Especially while I'm still making my measly barely-above-min-wage income.

I'm just on the verge of 28 (Thursday), married, and live in a small house where my husband and I tend to our own vegetable garden and chickens. We have two dogs and four cats on top of that. (Hey, I work from home. I need the company!)

I'm an aspiring author, lover of music (and involved in the local punk scene), and all-around crafty person. I'm generally not happy unless I'm making things. My new foray into fountain pen ownership has led me here and I'm excited to dig in. :)

Hello and welcome. Don't forget the Esterbrook fountain pens while you are exploring pens. They were well made of quality materials to be workhorses for the average person. Changing nibs does not require shipping the pen off to a professional. They just screw out and screw in. It is so easy to try different styles of nibs. A restored Esterbrook will cost about $40. Plus, for a crafty person such as yourself, they are a great pen to learn the art of pen restoration.

I will gladly check those out! I love learning the bits and bobs that go into my crafts. I've already started reading up on making your own inks. While I have access to a woodworking shop and various machinery (through my FIL), I doubt I'd really get into pen turning. It seems like a greater investment of time/money than I have. But restoration? Hmmmm!

I'll look into them, thanks! :)

Welcome, Auspice !

Two dogs and four cats ? All I got around the house is a wife. Not as much fun as a "box of cats", but easier on the drapes.

We like to go for a walk together, and neighbors don't chase us, when we stop to admire the flowers. Six of one . . . . etc.

Modern manufacturing uses petroleum-based plastics. I make a solution of five drops DAWN detergent to three ounces of

room temp water, and flush the pen "inards" to remove manufacturing residue. (Just in case you want to try it.)

The Jinhao x750 is a big, heavy pen. Does the size and weight suit you ? Which ink did you choose for it ? Inexpensive

does not always mean cheap. Make good use of the experiences of fellow members.

Write with joy.

Hi and welcome to FPN

Cheap pens are not always bad pens....

Enjoy your Jinhao. I have one myself, not a bad pen at all.

Enjoy the forum

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! I've been super spacey this week and busy with work, which is why it's taken me a few days to get back. But! I'm ready to delve in and have some fun. :)

My husband and I love animals and have a soft spot for rescues. 3 of our 5 hens are rescues. 2 of 4 cats are strays we rescued and the other 2 came from rescue organizations. One of our dogs came from the county animal care (from their 'urgent' list, which means they're on their way to being put down). The puppy, well, she was the last of a litter a friend was giving away. Not a rescue at all, but I've had puppy fever. ;)

The Jinhao is heavy, but I like weighty things. I'm not sure why. Once the cap is on the end, the balance is lovely, IMO. :)

As for ink... I have some old cartridges that fit. Not the best option, but... it's what I had on hand. I haven't made up my mind re: inks yet (what I want to start out)... so I think I'm gonna go through Goulet for some samples to start and see what happens from there. :)

Oh my, ah... Anything I can get into? Haha. I love creating things. Mostly these days I knit, crochet, embroider, and cross-stitch. I dabble in jewelry making and clay sculpting from time to time.

Thank you, thank you! Jealous you have a brick and mortar. I, alas, have... nothing local, it would seem.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
