I discovered that during the last year when searching for information I routinely ended up on FPN so decided to join up; peruse the forums and perhaps find some way to contribute.

I’ve been an avid fountain pen user since college and still have my Waterman (turquoise case, 14k gold nib) which I got for my birthday some decades ago. I just had it restored and is now writing well again.

I’ve been writing almost exclusively with Montblancs for the last 19 years with the Meisterstuck 146 being the work horse. A few years ago I added a Montblanc Boheme as a travel pen; I liked the more robust build and the retractable nib. It’s also easier to take a few cartridges on a flight than a bottle of ink.

This last Christmas my wife gave me the Montblanc Carlo Collodi and I found some accompanying ink to pair up. This pen has been a real joy to write with and I’ve even grown fond of the brownish ink (I’ve been a traditional black/blue writer). It has a medium nib like my others and while appears a little ostentatious with the gold cap design, when unposted presents a solid streamline appearance and very smooth writing. I’ll include a photo below.

Hi and welcome to FPN

I'm not a fan of the 14x range, but the Writers Editions are great. I have the Cervantes myself. That ink would go nicely with it....

Enjoy the forum

Welcome !

I think beyond about $100-$150, part of the fountain pen is jewelry. Yours is a pretty cap. Dad's was a gold arrow.

Just a reminder that it is never wise to flaunt jewelry in public. By the way, a guy with an open magazine, on a crowded

bus, can lift an fp from the pocket.

Always alert. Thanks.

I like the Cervantes, a very nice look.

My wife is also someone who enjoys writing and has a Greta Garbo and a Princess Grace she trades back and forth.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
