Apologies for not being specific about the thread being Sheaffer-focused -- I thought it would be understood in the Sheaffer sub-forum. I'm not sure how to change the title of the thread?

Thanks for that Sheaffer collecting article, Jon. Always looking for a good read!

No worries on the thread. I happen to just make a habit of looking at "New Content", which just gives me a list of current topics, and I don't tend to look to see which fora or sub-fora they eminate from. Glad you liked the read, some spectacular pens there!

In regards to hit or miss from the direct sale from eBay:

Miss (far right): Sheaffer Snorkel Admiral in Black, listed that the sac was 'old', as such that it "might not fill", but for an extra 'fee' they can replace the sac. won for $41, indeed the sac was non-functional, $35 to have it completely restored, polished, aligned, etc with year warranty by another person.

If a seller can replace a sac, then they have enough know-how, to know if the sac will fill or not, they wanted $25 just to replace the sac before shipping, I declined on the sac replacement since for $10 more I'd get a cleaning, all internal parts replaced/lubed, sac installed, snorkel aligned, dings/scratches/pits removed, nib polished and adjusted, a warranty, and 2-day turn around time. So it annoys me when the seller is going to be like "might not", when they have the expertise to know whether or not.

Hit (2nd one): Sheaffer Craftsman in Persian Blue, restored sac, polished with Brazilian Carnauba Wax and #33 nib. $21

My best deals on eBay were these three Targas:

Model 1067, Gun Metal, like new condition, 14K medium nib, $35

Model 1022, Imperial Black, like new condition, 14K medium nib, Enterprise Car Rental logo on top end of cap, $36

Model 1005, Gold Fluted, good condition, 14K fine nib, $34.50

Ones that got away: too numerous to count! I'm careful about my max bids and refuse to worry about losing a pen to someone who overbids for it. In most cases there will be another one along in a while.

Almost like a twin to Bill: one of the nicer finds a couple years ago was a NOS Targa 1003, which is matte black with GP hardware and gold nib. $35.00 incl. shipping!

I call this a hit, a White Dot "1000" oversize for $85 shipped, needs restoration to write but outside and nib look great, no brassing at all. Big beefy black pen, I love it!

Holy c-rap, that compact is an amazing deal! I think they must have missed an extra "9," though.

Squee! I have added some more OS Balances to the stable. I don't have any of them yet but will post pics when I do. Damn, those things are pricey -everyone else seems to love them too. They will all need to be cleaned up, which means more waiting until I can use them, but maybe by then I will have the first ones back to play with. :D

Nicely done, GF set even.

Hopefully you also ordered a Sunshine Cloth and a tube of Simichrome and have some spare flannel shirts laying around.

Start doing your finger flexercises for polishing duty. ;)

Always fun to come back from vacation and find a couple of pens waiting...

One miss, but part of a two-pen sale. I bought for the small Moore in a color I didn't have, and the Sheaffer green striated Balance had not only a worse than expected nib, but the feed was broken. Worth it for the Moore, but not a sumgai.

But one hit: a Navy Blue Eversharp Skyline with a GF cap and one of their delightful extra flexible nibs - good gracious, this pen writes like a charm! The old sac was still pliable so I sucked up some water and reconstituted the dry ink - it looks just like Quink Turquoise. Marvelous find for $22.00

Ok, this is just one guy's opinion: for something so inexpensive, it is almost hard to call a miss. It isn't any kind of hit, because it isn't a particularly high-end pen, nor is it in good condition. The crux of the decision will be the nib: it appears to be a bit 'sprung', as in a somewhat flexible nib that has been pressed too hard and spread out. If the nib can be tweaked back into good shape (getting the tines closer together and aligned) and still has some spring in it, it could end up being a very expressive writing instrument. Sometimes, even when it is a bit of an "ugly duckling", that aspect can be outweighed by it's usefulness. I'm hoping for the best, and it is money well-spent, right in the middle - a solid, if not exceptional, purchase.

Again, just one viewpoint.

All of that, except, IMO, that nib is Way Past *just* sprung.

A Hugh Jass Black 'un went for less than $100 shipped. I even twitched a couple times on that one.

Does anyone know what size nib it is, or what other nibs would fit so I can look for a replacement if it turns out to be unusable? Or maybe a Nib Meister in the US that's pretty quick?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
