Pelikan Maki-E Seaside Limited Edition Fountain Pen

Recommended Posts

Greetings everyone!

Pelikan has launched a new model of the collection Maki-e, and we are very glad to share it with all of you.

The Japanese artist Shozo Nakamura painted this fountain pen and we can see how well he captured the essence of the painting he was inspired in (”The great wave of Kanagawa” by Hokusai Katsushika), with the glittering water of the curling wave on the barrel.

It is made of tiny pieces of mother-of-pearl and egg shell, and to complete the seaside feeling, the cap is decorated with two Japanese traditional kites and plover birds that swoop over the waves.

This is a limited edition of 88 fountain pens of 18 carat bi-color gold nibs.

Take a look and contact us if you like it!

What a feast for the eyes! I have several prints of this, most famous image, the Great Wave of Kanagawa by Hosukai.

I have a small print in my office at work, and a larger framed print-on-canvas here in my office at home. This is just one of a series of 46 images by Hosukai depicting different views of Mt Fuji. I also have a print of another image in the series, Ejiri in Surugu Province:

I think this pen is stunning, but it's not on my lust list, just something beautiful to admire. Of the Maki-e Pelikans, Sea World is my favorite, well it was, now I'm not sure.

I have a Koi pond and one of these days a Maki-e Pelikan featuring a Kohaku or a Showa Sanshoku and then, ... I'm going to be in trouble.

I'm afraid to even ask for the price. If this was a Sailor or another Japanese pen, I would guess the pen would probably retail for around $1,000, but since this is Pelikan I'm guessing closer to $5,000?

Ball-point pens are only good for filling out forms on a plane.

I have seen the Sea world pen offered for just under $5,800. It was a limited edition of 88 pieces in 2009 I believe. I have no details on the Great Wave pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
