Amber is one of my favourite colors. It's defined as a mix of red and green.

However in the nature we rarely see "clean" colors. That's perfectly OK - that's why nature is so fascinating :) Amber can look like this:

Amber has been appreciated by artists for its color and natural beauty, howevet it inspires not only artists but also ink manufacturers. Three of four compared inks were named after amber. Inti produced by L'Artisan Pastellier in France was named after ancient Incan sun god; given its color is really close to these ink ambers, I've decided to compare it with them.
Please, take a look at scans and photos I've prepared.

SUMMARY

I really like two colors Amber and Inti. Amber is great however it’s not really waterproof, besides it shows tendency to clogging on some of my nibs. That’s why I consider INTI to be number one. Ambre de Birmanie has beautiful color, but it is NOT practical: it’s difficult to read text written with it in bright light. Arima Amber is boring – it flows well and seems to be OK, but it just doesn’t have wowo factor.

Below you’ll find photos of each swab (I wish the colors were so rich on scans and in every-day use :) )

I'm curious which one is your favourite?

Thank you! What a lovely review. This is also one of my favourite ink colours, maybe even the colour of anything. But why did you compare only four? Actually, my very most favourite Amber is AMBER LEA.

Great review! I have all 4 of these, but my favorite is Ambre de Birmanie, followed by Inti. AdB stays brighter and has more pop on the page after several days. Inti and Edelstein Amber both look a little flat and dull after a few days. Arima Amber is more of a Terra Cotta color, which is a nice color, but I was hoping for something more like AdB when I ordered it. I use a lot of AdB!

Great reviews / comparisons!

I've used the Pelikan Edelstein Amber and enjoyed it. I have samples of a couple of others - I may need to have a closer look at them after seeing them presented so beautifully here.

Thanks for the awesome review!

I have the Edelstein Amber, I think it captures the essence of Amber perfectly.

I don't know Inti....ah ha, the Paris ink/art company that ships in little foil bags to cut mailing costs.....

I'd not thought of buying Pelikan Amber...now I do.

I was very pleased at seeing the shading of the Pelikan and the Inti.

Don't like the 'dullness' factor mentioned.

Edelstein Amber is a lovely cooer, but I've also noticed that it has a very flat/matte appearance when dry.

Diamine Ochre is in the same colour-space and well worth considering.

I own a bottle of the Pelikan. But, the more I've used it, the less I like it. It seems to have a bluish/greenish component that becomes more visible on cheaper paper or a wider nib. I notice your swatches don't have that, so maybe I got a bad bottle?

I'm surprised by the warmth of the Callifolio ink, the ones I have tried are all cool colors and rather washed out. I think of the INTI as the color I most associate with amber, although this Amber has hair the color of the Sailor ink.

As thorough and beautiful as your reviews usually are, this review is exceptional even for you, and your love for the inks in this color range shines through. Even though you indicate early on which of the four has really caught your eye, your review does not exhibit any bias that I can perceive. Well done and thank you.

Oo, I love the comparisons -- and the swatches (swabs). For writing, though, the Inti edges ahead.

Lovely colors.

I love the reddish-orange at the edges of Edelstein Amber. It's the one LE Edelstein ink that I wish Pelikan would bring back.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
