Montblanc 12/14 Piston Disassembly

Hi,

 

I watched a youtube video of a Japanese repairer disassembling a Montblanc 22. When he took apart the piston, he simply applied heat, and pulled the piston unit out. Are there any tips or tricks? It doesn't seam to work for me...

The pen I write with, is the pen I use to sign my name.

I have probably watched that video 10 times in last week. i will also be interested . It seems to me he pulls the barrel off the upper section that holds the piston with quite a heafty yank not pull the piston out of the barrel . He also uses a sudden leveraged push in reassembly. I'll leave it to the pros I think

I actually watched the same video and was able to disassembly my Montblanc 24. The main thing I would do is take your time with the blowdryer. I tried off and on for probably 2 hours before it finally worked. Also, soaking it in warm water helped. Just take your time and be careful not to snap anything off. Or, send it in to a professional!

Just remember to keep the piston knob screwed shut or you will snap the worm drive.

 

Also don't forget the person in that video has probably done this hundreds of times and probable has the spares to replace anything he broke, especially in the early days when he was perfecting his technique.

 

Remember the old rule of Pen repair, if you cannot afford to break it send it to someone who can ;)

I've done this operation a few times. I found it takes about two to three minutes of hair dryer heat on a higher setting, with continuous rotation of the pen throughout. Afterwards, I have been able to pull the piston by using section grips and a rubbery sheet to hold things firmly. That usually works.

 

I have a strong dowel on top of which I put a bit of rubber. You can brace this on the floor and after heating the pen, slide the dowel into the barrel and then push down on the barrel so that the piston assembly is forced out. It works but it is tricky. It can be useful when the binde cap is weak.

 

I second the point made by Paul80 that you should pull the assembly with the binde cap/piston knob screwed down.

I just got a good deal on a 32 with a problematic piston. After reading this thread, I soaked the barrel and piston assembly (with section removed) for about twenty-four hours. Then I used some heat and grasped the barrel and piston knob with gripper squares and pulled, and the pen came right apart. I can't deny that I was probably somewhat lucky!

 

But I do think that soaking is a good idea since dried ink could make removing the piston much harder and heat will not help loosen the dried ink. The only metal parts seem to be the trim on the piston knob (if any) and the disk retaining the helical piston rod in the piston knob. This disk seems to be made of brass and therefore not prone to rusting, but I would not want to soak for too long.
