New Caran D'ache Bottles

Ok, this might be a strange question, but I'm hoping that someone can help me out. I recently bought an empty Caran d'Ache bottle from the Goulets because I think the bottle is the bee's knees but I'm not really sold on any of the inks. When I got it, I had a bear of a time cleaning out the cap because there was some serious corrosion that had occurred. My guess is that the all metal cap does not agree well with getting ink splashed on it, perhaps a fatal error for an ink bottle.

Anyway, I got most of the corrosion cleaned off with a q-tip dunked in vinegar, but there's still some rough spots. I know that it will likely get worse and then I'll have to clean it again and again. I hesitate to put any kind of chrome polish or anything on it, since I don't know how it will react with the ink inside. Thus, my question: Would putting a thin layer of silicone grease on the threads inside the cap protect them for being further corroded? The bottle also does not screw on super smoothly, likely due to the metal on glass action, so I'm sure a little grease would help that too...

Thanks in advance for any wisdom! :-)

None of my new CdAs have ever approached such a problem. The liners/seals within the caps are still all snow-white with only a few tiny droplets of condensed ink on them. I'd say that you must have got a "bad lot". Ask CdA for details, and -- for that price -- they ought to refurbish same 100%.

Goulet's has great customer service, have you contacted them?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

I thought about it, but I just don't know that it's worth it. I mean, it's not like the bottle is unusable and it's just going to sit on my counter anyway. I'll probably go with the silicone grease option and call it good. I'm storing IG ink in it anyway, so I don't know if that would eventually start to corrode the cap regardless...?

Just shoot them an email and ask if they could send you a cap. Really, you'll be happy you did.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
