Long/short Model Mysteries

I've got my hands on some long/shorts (or is it short/longs) whose model names/numbers elude me, as well as dates of production. Please weigh in if you can help--

First, what I think is a couple of Platinum PBK-2000, but I'm not positive. Apart from a want of catalogues to lean on, there's two different clips. Also, on the stubby little barrel, one has "18K" and "PLATINUM" separated by a little arrowhead, which is expected, but on the other the arrowhead is replaced by an eight-point starburst.

I have another with a 14K point that looks much like the one with the more decorated clip, but that difference of gold content suggests a different model number, right?

Second, a Sailor with a 21K point. There is a very faint impression on the section near the joint reading 102, which may well be the model number, but I've enough experience with misleading body markings to seek confirmation.

Finally, a real troublemaker of a Pilot. The point has no content indicator, just "SUPER QUALITY", so it's probably just plated. The body is made of VERY THIN metal, likely aluminum, and the only markings off the point is the difficult to read screened thing on the cap. The western script reads "Di**bdy" (the obscure letters might be "ar" which doesn't help much). The Japanese is a bit of a jumble to me--

MI (katakana) or 3, the vowel extending dash or 1, DO (hiragana), something I really can't make out (but shows up well in the picture), I (katakana).

When they were made is almost as important to me as what the dickens they are, so as much detail as you can throw at me will be clung to with glee.

I can read something from the last photo of Pilot.

It's not "Di**bdy" but "Pink Lady", a name of female duo unit from the 70's whose names are "mie" and "kei".

The characters written below are "mie" in katakana - "to(and)" in hiragana - "kei" in katakana.

The pen is for some promotion, I suppose.

Sorry I don't know much about other pens but previously I owned one of those pocketable fountain pens.

Their marketing targets were students in those days.

Oh, that brightens my day immensely; I've recently been reading about an acquaintance's self-inflicted trial of watching DVDs of the execrable and frequently racist "Pink Lady and Jeff" variety TV show from 1980. Nothing against Pink Lady themselves; just a terrible, terrible show that got hung around their necks.

Assuming that it's not from their reunion tour, the promotional nature gives a pretty narrow window of production on that pen which helps me out in the actual point of this thread, so I thank you twice.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
