Longtime fountain pen user--I have delusions of being a published author some day and writing a first draft with a fountain pen is my preferred psychological crutch when inspiration is running thin--but completely new to actually collecting them, and to maintenance beyond periodic flushing with water.

I am sadly in search of a new daily pen, as my black Esterbrook J went walkabout when I moved last June, and my glass dip pen is still packed... somewhere. The only pens I have in hand right now are my grandfather's Conklin Endura Symetrik (in need of repair), and a Parker "21" desk set that arrived in the mail yesterday from eBay.

Not much else -- my ID is from Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fandom and stands for The Rev Dr Sherwood Forrester; I'll answer to Rev or Sherwood or 'Hey, you!', or just about anything really. I feel obliged to point out that I'm not a doctor in either the medical, academic, or Time Lord senses... and I'm not especially a reverend either. :)

That's the way I wrote my first draft - and second draft, too. I feel that writing that way makes me slow down and think about the words more. I'm not a "collector". I have maybe 30 FPs and tend to rotate. I think I used one of my M200s for most of the writing.

I don't do all that much for maintaining my pens others than flushing either.

Welcome, Doctor Sherwood !

Starting with a pen in good condition, regular flushing is all that is necessary for the first couple of decades.

(unless you lose the darn thing). By all means, have your grandfather's fountain pen restored to full use.

Daily use fountain pens are very personal. Heirloom pens are priceless. I cherish several inherited pens.

Write with joy.

(All is forgiven, if you replace the Esterbrook. )

Thanks, all for your welcome! Looking forward to learning more about the field... and, needless to say, acquiring more fine writing implements. :)

And yes, Sasha, my poor dear Esterbrook is going to be replaced... just as bad, it was tucked into a NASA JPL folder, also no longer with me, that I got from someone I knew who worked there. I can only hope they are still together--both my pen and the folder, and my friend and NASA. I'm hoping the Romus demonstrator that's slowly on its way from India will make an good daily-use pen; the review elsewhere on FPN made me decide to give it a go.

Welcome! ...whoever you are.

Another chap in UK goes by Sherwood (Forest)...you'll no doubt take that up with him soon.

The photo is rather Vincent Price..ish. Enjoy fountain penning about. From where in India did you order the FP you're eagerly (but slowly) waiting for?

thanks & best wishes, Captain Nib

Thomas, I've been looking at those; I am probably going to get another Esterbrook J, but I'm not wedded to the idea and if I get another pen that writes as well, I can live with a spiritual rather than physical replacement. :)

Cap'n, it's coming from Palwal, which according to Google Maps is south of New Delhi. And the photo is of something of a local TV hero of about 50 years ago, the great Cleveland movie host "Ghoulardi".

Welcome to the Fountain Pen Network. I'm very sorry to hear about your lost Esterbrook. I hope you are able to replace it. I also hope you enjoy your time here with us.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
