If anyone has the time and inclination to post them on FPN, I'm guessing there would be a lot of interest. Thanks!

Spring and love arrived on a bird's sweet song. "How does that little box sound like birds and laughter?" I asked the gypsy violinist. He leaned back, pointing to his violin. "Look inside, you'll see the birdies sing to me" soft laughter in his voice. "I hear them, I can almost see them!", I shouted as his bow danced on the strings. "Ah yes" he said, "your heart is a violin." Shony Alex Braun

I made it in to LA around 9 PM local time and after close to 45 minutes of waiting I managed to get a cab to the Manhattan Beach Marriott. By the time I got there, checked in, unpacked & got ready for Friday AM it was past midnight & bed time for this camper.

The 6 am wake up call came way too soon for my tastes. After a quick salmon & caper everything bagel it was set up time. I got a great spot right inside the ballroon doors. Set up and waited for the fun to begin.

The sales on Friday were decent with pretty good traffic. I did a few restorations, made some sales & talked with several friends including Andy Hoffman and his delightful wife.

I picked up 2 huge parts lots from Lex for a very fair price. As soon as people heard I had parts for sale they were on me like jackals on a fresh kill. Not that it bothered me in the slightest mind you...lol.

Dinner later on that night at McCormick & Schmicks(?) was unbelieveable. I got a coule of odd looks when I told the waiter to "surprize me" with what I got for dinner. (something (I enjoy ding on a regular basis, I think it's fun not knowing what I'll be getting to enjoy) I think more than 1/2 of our party thought I was crazy or finally got the confirmation of it...lol.

Saturday was a huge let down. I only sold 2 or 3 minor pieces & a couple of repair tools. To say I was starting to sweat was an understatement. I still didn't have a confirmed table for Sunday & still hadn't made back the cost of my flight & room yet. (eek!)

The upside of the day was talking to Paul Rossi for an hour plus at my table. I got to see his Stonehenge & Stary Night pens up close & personal. What can I say. He's truly a master at what he does & a hell'uva nice guy on top of it all.

The wine gathering in Kevin's room was a blast. I got to hang out with some of the best people you can imagine. Bruno Corsini, Joyce Tang & Jeff Boschert (Designers/cfraftspeople of the "Squid Pen" more on this later) Sheila Quinn & her son Kyle (a powerhouse of raw 10 yr old energy) Aaron Taubman (The Noble Savage) & his dad Morris, Andy Hoffman & his wife Monica. (what a sweetheart) There were so many more people there that I couldn't possibly list them all. Needless to say it was a stellar evening.

I was having such a good time I completely forgot my camera was in my pocket... headsmack.gif blink.gif

Sunday 12:30 was check out. So I gathered up everything and spent an hour packing then went downstairs to schmooze as I still didn't have a table. About 30 minutes after I got back downstairs I was talking to Stan K when my personal hero, Boris Rice announced there was 1 table open because someone wasn't able to make it due to the nasty weather. Truly I feel bad that anyone had to miss the show but, THANK YOU MOTHER NATURE!

I was on Boris in a flash & before I knew it I had my table. So it was back to the room unpack everything and haul it down to the show for a hasty set up. I wasn't even 1/2 way unpacked/set up before I had folks buying my repair DVD's, parts & pens. It was bedlam. (man did I love it...lol)

The show shut down at 5 PM I had extended my checkout time to 6 so It was back to the room for a fast pack job. Back downstairs for some "see you next year or in Chicago" "loved meeting you's" Checked out of the hotel and headed for the air port. Then the concern of will I get a flight home set it. The weather reports were sounding really bad & flights were being cancelled.

I got to the terminal around 7:30 PM or so. Good News/Bad News. My flight was still ok but didn't leave un until 7:00 AM the next morning! UGH. One of the major drawbacks of using (hotwire? give us the date, we'll give you the time) so I managed to find a relatively dark & quite "dead end" in the international terminal where I promptly crashed out for 9 hours of the worst sleep I've ever had, on the floor with 15 other passengers bound for parts unknown. Check in, and boarding & the flight home went smoothly. I made it home and all but went down for the count. It doesn't sound like a long weekend but let me tell you folks, I was BEAT!

So all together it was a great show. I met & made new friends, got to hang out with some of the best people possible, made a few bucks & got to see more pens in 3 days than I would have anywhere else.

I apparently inadvertantly made Susans day on Saturday when I gave her a Parker Calendar Jotter in the box with the instruction sheet. It turns out she's never had an instruction sheet turn up.

I tried 5 or 6 shots and this was the best i could get of the Squid Pen. The sun just wasn't playing nice that day. This is one of if not the most amazing piece of functional 3d art I've ever seen. I'll let Joyce or Jeff give you the specs of the pen. I do recall it has either ruby or Sapphire eyes, a sterling, gold or platinum bell/cap. Joyce hand engraves the nibs with a shell design that is out of this world.

The only let down of the show was I couldn't find a DJ Parker 51 in any condition for anything less than $300.00. Such is life. looks like it's time for a prowl through ebay.

Thanks for taking the time to post all the pictures and recount your experiences. Really, every single time I read about a pen show I lament having not had the chance to attend one. I hope you find that sub$300 DJ at the next show.

David's watch looks like a Hamilton Pacer to me. Really sharp watches.

Best regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Hi guys,

The watch is a modern hamilton reissue of their old assymetric watch. I don't do watches but picked it up at the Philly show just because it was durn purty. Of course it seems not to be working right. If a new battery this week does not solve... the darn thing might need to go back wallbash.gif

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
