Muji A5 Denim Tag Notebook Cover

Just picked up one of these notebook covers from the Muji's near Times Square in NYC. I am loving it! The only size left was the biggest one, but I am okay with that.

Another plus for these covers is that they are reasonably thin so they work very well with a thin notebook. I use the B5 with the Lihit twist ring and they work beautifully. Some of the heavier styles of covers need a robust sort of notebook.

There's a few in stock in the Muji near me, if anyone in the US is looking for one I'd be happy to mail it out at cost (those should ship pretty cheap via media mail, right?). I have to make a trip to send my bro some notebooks anyway!

I should add that I use mine a little differently to most people.

I have mostly used them for taking ethnographic field notes, so lots of writing, running from one notebook into the next. As a result what I have taken to doing is putting two of the Muji charcoal notebooks into the (b4 size) denim cover, with the front of one book in the left side and the back cover of the second book in the right side. It's a nice way of carrying the two books if you are in need of moving from one to the next quickly. The Muji cover takes two Muji books nicely, not sure if it would cope with two Rhodia/Clairfontaine books though.

I'll upload a picture if I can find a camera later.

Thanks to this thread, I made my first ever visit to a Muji store last week, the one on 19th St. in Chelsea (NYC). I'd never heard of or seen Muji before. Neat store! I found one -- and only one -- of the A5-size denim tag notebook covers, so it left with me, as did a pack of five A5 notebooks which I *think* are made with the recycled paper. They're made in Indonesia. I haven't opened the package yet and so I haven't had a look at them. FYI, the Chelsea Muji had lots of the B5 covers if anyone's looking for those.

The denim cover is now holding a Clairefontaine notebook. I like the cover, it has that pseudo-suede sort of feel, it's classy yet casual looking, and it seems like it'll be reasonably rugged.

For those who can no longer find the Muji denim tag covers, you can find the "material" online in Etsy stores. I ordered some of this material in several colors and intend to cover some custom journals with the paper. It's basically a washable paper from what I have read and really neat stuff.

Let us know how that turns out--very interested in the results. The same material can be found at Amazon.com as well.

How are you two finding this material? I've looked in both Etsy and Amazon and am not seeing it. I've tried denim tag (fabric, material), jeans tag (fabric, material), denim paper tag, etc. Nothing.

I still use these covers everyday. They are fantastic. Stuck an Apple sticker on one for fun and it stuck like, ummm, well, you know what to you know what.

There were a bunch of these covers (more B5 than A5) at the Muji here in San Francisco today. I grabbed several in A5. They're great! (no connection with Muji)

I hadn't been in the store in months so no idea when they refreshed their stock.

Good pick up. They have been seen in black in Singapore. What colour did you get?

Tan like those shown earlier in this thread. I didn't see any other colors.

Thanks - apparently black exists but I haven't seen it. They are terrific value and very durable. What was the current price?

They were $5.95 each. (Item # 4548718831937)

I also have some bad news for local folks. I went back to the same San Francisco store tonight hoping to grab one or two more A5's, just in case. Unfortunately, all the A5's were now gone. I asked one of the sales people if they had more and she said no. She also didn't know if or when they'd be getting more. She did say that they've had them for a while. There were still over 20 B5's (I counted).

I contacted MUJI U.S.A. and received the following response today…

“Dear customer,

Thank you for your interest in MUJI.

We are truly sorry, but [Denim Tag Series] is discontinued at this moment. Please accept our apologies for any disappointment. If you have any questions in regard of MUJI product, please contact us at 877-414-9402, or email to online@muji.com.”

Anyone seen these covers back in store anywhere?

Last time I checked with Muji (about 2 months ago) they advised that, as far as they were aware, there were no plans to re-stock these covers. Great shame - I really like mine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
