Rusted Sailor 1911

OK, maybe not rusted (or is it?) but tarnished spots.

I mean, everything in this pen is well built and quality. Why did the clip develop spots in just 1 month of purchased brand new? I have about 50 pens new or vintage and only have a few vintage that have tarnished. All my modern pen do not have these issues even the cheap $6 Chinese pens.

The 1911 never leave home too and always in pen case which I use it once a while. It is quite an eye sore to me when my pen is new, shining but spotty clip. :headsmack:

It's the entire clip all over the place and increasing every day.

I am very reluctant to consider Sailor any more... I heard Platinum have similar issue and Pilot has better material quality?

It may be that your pen case has some material in it that causes corrosion, or it may be the high humidity of Singapore. I have had a Sailor, that developed pitting on the ring on the section, just because I had left it capped for months, and condensation was sitting right on the ring. Or it could be you have something that is microabrasive, that is gradually causing the damage...

None of my Sailors have done this and I've had them all for many years. Maybe the old ones were made of better materials???

I have many pens in the same case including Waterman, Hero, Pelikan, Duke. Of course I would consider it has batch issue or individual issue because the cap band have no spots (yet) except the clip. Still, not happy :glare:

My Sailors have a couple of spots on the top of the clip but nothing as serious as yours. You should go get it checked out!

Yea. It is like a few new spots every day. I even tried wiping with tissue with a bit of mineral oil and it didn't stop it. I think it come from inside out. The other gold finishing has no spot yet except the clip.

I would send it in for a replacement. They DO service their pens, as long as it didn't come from a grey/black market source.

It just recently happened to my MB 146..wiped it with the silver cloth and it cleared off.

I received my Sailor 1991 Standard today from Levenger. I am extremely happy with the purchase. However, the metal barrel of cap came corroded. The words Sailor Japan are not visible. I ordered the red version of the pen.

Does anyone know, if Levenger would send me a shiny new cap or do I have to replace the whole pen? Shipping was extremely slow.

What is your pen case made of? Leather? Fabric?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've seen something similar on the cap rings of a FPH LE 1911. If you look at it with a magnifier, the brass shows through the surface gold in spots, and is prone to corrosion. Heavily tanned leather pen pouches may increase the effect (due to tannic acid used in the tanning process?)

The solution is to polish it with a silver polishing cloth, thereby removing the patina. In my experience, you're not going to get a new cap from the vendor.

That said, I've never had that problem with Sailor before and think they are using a thinner layer of gold over the brass. The clip construction has changed, too, at some point. I've stopped buying Sailor for that reason (I was tempted by the Earth LE, but then decided against it.)

Btw, I've seen that on MB pens as well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
