I drive a car.

Why BMW? Why not Mercedes, Audi or Ford for that matter?

I was only asking a question, but thanks for questioning the question instead of answering the question. Very helpful.

I drive a jaguar. I've had 4 bmw's and a merc.

Yes, I am a victim of branding or seeker of quality and reliability, depending on which side of the fence you choose ?

I wouldn't change either my MB or Jag though. Both are well performing timeless classics in my eyes and that is what matters, right?

Toyota FJ. Hopefully it won't give me as many problems as my Mercedes did :)

In order to appreciate the sweet, you must truly taste the bitter....

I drove a Honda Civic. Sold it last month, cos I moved and keeping the car would have been expensive and inconvenient.

For many years, I didn't own a car but either walked, biked, rode public transportation (the subway), and rented a car when I needed a vehicle. I owned several Montblancs during this time. Correlation? Hmmm....

Sometimes I have the feeling that some people are really bored, to ask such questions.

May I add some others?

Prefer MB Owners red cars or blue ones?

Do MB owners drive faster than Pelikan owners?

Do MB owners have more traffic accidents than others?

Do people asking such questions have a MB and or a BMW, or are they still play with matchbox cars? ;)

Great stuff, keep it coming. I'm compiling some flowcharts, graphs and spider diagrams relating to this.

You didn't mention spider diagrams............................I would have quite a different answer.

I bought a BMW 3 series coupe, but I bought it before the Mont Blanc starwalker.... In fact the pen just came yesterday.... And like my car..... Just lightly used.

My goodness, that's quite a line-up of cars. Did you own them as vintage cars or when they were new-ish?

Do you think your purchasing decision process is the same for all major purchases? What is the order of priority with regards to say 'user experience', reliability, resellability, appearance, social alignment, etc?

Right now, a 1999 Buick Century. Planning to upgrade to a Lacrosse in the new year.

Social alignment only comes in when I need a good laugh. How silly.

Some new, some used, some old. And forgot several like Alpines and Renaults and SAABs and Volvos.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
