Found My Perfect Leather Pen Case -- A First Look

Thanks yet again Michael! Anytime I can inspire someone else then I am doing my job for the custom leather community! Just remember, if you screw something up, keep at it until you get it right (or until your fingers or hands are so numb you can't move them anymore...)

Looks very similar to the cases T-MBH makes:

http://fp-hakase.com/products/IMG_9105_R.JPG

They use specific lasts for each pen, and clip.

I have two - one for each Hakase, and they are exquisite...

Too many pens; too little writing.

Lovely! Website doesnt seem to translate that well though

Those are lovely, too! Sadly, as Pen Nut mentioned, the page doesn't translate - my translator app didn't translate a single word - but the pictures are nice!

I agree it is a fine looking case but I cant help but wonder where they are made and who makes them.

If I were to buy something like this then I would want to know who made it.

As it happens I plan to make one for my recently acquired Delta oversize pen as soon as I can find someone in the UK who sells Kydex.

I was able to translate T-MBH website using Google translate and it appears that he handmakes these cases and many others. If my currency conversion is right, they sell for about $700 each.

And you'll wait up to a year for one of those, too... But the T-MBH cases look like a Goodyear welted English-made pair of brogues. Pretty awesome. But the price would pay for the Nakaya I want next...

I realize that part of what you were after in having your case made of leather is the look and feel of the leather itself. I won't discount that at all; I really like leather, too. But you know what, I like my pens better and I'd rather spend my money on pens rather than on a custom leather case. So, here's what I did:

I started with a small slide-top finger-jointed cigar box, very well made, that originally held a single Don Pepin Garcia Limited Edition 2013 cigar. I carefully sanded and varnished the parts of the box that had been left unfinished, and made certain that the slide top slid easily yet still locked nicely into place when fully closed.

Next, I found some baize. Baize is a woven 100% wool fabric - looks like felt, but it's woven, not pressed - that is used to cover high-end billiard tables. It is all natural material, tough enough to stand up to pool cues and such, yet it is remarkably soft and non-abrasive. In short, a very good material to be rubbing against the finish of a fine fountain pen.

I cut a single piece of baize so that it covered all the inside surfaces of the box - since the lid slides I could not attach the baize to it, so I made a flap that can be folded over the pen before closing the lid - and lined the box with the baize.

Now I have a very secure pen case that may not be bullet proof, but it sure will withstand significant abuse with no damage to the precious pen inside. I can drop it into my bag or backpack with no worries at all.

I've attached some pictures with my Montblanc 149 in the box.

Nice work John there is no way I could justify spending $200 for the original case so $700 is not going to happen either.

Like you my thoughts turned to what I could make.

So here is my first effort it needs the edges trimmed and tidying up it is a prototype as the kydex I ordered has not arrived yet. I made it for my oversize Delta pen but made it the full length of the pen which was an error as it is difficult to get the pen out.

The full work in progress is here

That is really cool, John. As you said, I like mine for the leather. But the slide rule case is pretty nifty.

Aside from the Newton Pens one that's the nicest pen coffin I've seen.

That is an excellent video thanks very much I am sure I can pick up some tips from it.

Here is my third effort at a pen case it has a kydex lining front and back.

I have made a new form since I made this case which is thinner and has a little more shape in the front.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
