Welcome !

It's a Cross ballpoint pen. It looked good in a uniform shirt pocket, but I fount that it wrote like

something less (Caught myself on that one.).

It's probably 14K gold filled (thick plating). You are likely to be offered $3 for the pen. Precious

metal value might be $0.00.

Sorry.

It's actually 14k, not filled or rolled but actual 14k, that's why I was going to scrap it.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Looks like a Cross Spire.

I am not a specialist on vintage/second hand pens. Gold will of course bring in slightly more.

Ballpoints bring less than FPs

I saw a Golden Shimmer Spire listed for 69 USD on Ebay new.

Depending on the state yours is in, it will bring less.

It is worth a lot more than $69, it is a solid 14k gold Cross Century worth $500+.

Over the years, I have purchased a couple of pens and pencils in 14k. The $500+ range mentioned by Vincenzo is a bare minimum these days. As a ballpoint, it would usually be of less interest to a pen collector than a 14k fountain pen, but you may find a collector who has a matching Cross fountain pen and is seeking to complete a set. Even a fairly common fountain pen in 14k could carry a premium of 50% to 150% in additional to a $500 base. Pen collectors are not unlike other collectors, who look at scarcity, condition, age, history as well as supply and demand. And, there is the ego factor. Shucks, I would keep it for a while. It is unlikely to substantially diminish in value and might appreciate substantially. Who knows? And, welcome.

Welcome to the FPN! I would say sell it and buy an entry level fountain pen. This will allow you to fall in love with the fountain pen and research a really nice one (or several) to buy with the balance of your profit. This is coming from someone who doesn't like (hate might be too strong but close) ballpoints and electronic signature capture devices.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
