We're delighted to have secured a very limited number of a very limited edition pen from Platinum: only 300 of these pens are available worldwide. Each Platinum King of Tigers Urushi Lacquer Fountain Pen is decorated by hand meaning that no two pens are the same. Featuring a hand-painted tiger on the black barrel, the tiger design is applied using matt charcoal powder and glossy black Urushi lacquer.

Based on the classic #3776 design, this subtly stunning limited edition fountain pen is crafted by hand using traditional techniques.

The Platinum King of Tigers Fountain Pen is in stock on our site now. What do you think of it?

I saw it on your 'what's new' page. Love it. A lot. But think it is just outside my budget right now. And I am pretty sure I will reget it if I don't buy it, just give it a year or two :(

Beautiful! Your illustration shows the cap posted. Does it post in such a way as to prevent damage to the lacquer?

Assuming it does post, does this mean it is not based on the (lovely, I've got one) Izumo?

It is gorgeous....

So your budget stretched? :yikes:

It does look fantastic! I'm very jealous! But my budget is completely ripped to shreds this month and there is no way I could afford one even with the 20% off. My good lady wife is already looking a bit askew at the 5 pens I have sitting on my desk at the moment. And the 4 bottles of ink. She doesn't know that a Deep Dark Brown will be turning up today (thanks to reviews by you and The Good Captain, I hasten to add!)

Congrats on your new family member! :D

Now: what ink should I use first time I fill it? Carbon Black is the obvious choice, but I am looking for something less obvious. It is a medium nib, btw.

Just posted on your entry in the "show us your pens" thread. How about Herbin Ambre de Birmanie as a "tigery" colour?

Oh that is just beautiful. I *need* that pen so much. Sadly out of my price range but I can still admire it from afar

I'm sure, if you asked nicely, Mr. Cybaea would lend it to you indefinitely

Hmmm, they sold out quickly :) You can all breathe now. No more temptation.

Other than the Izumo, of course. And all the others.

If I had the money, I probably would have gone for the green Izumo anyway. But it's good that the King of Tigers has left the building... Just in case a mad moment took hold!

Looking forward to the review. Which ink did you go with in the end?

Haven't decided. It has been a computer day today and I have some issues with another pen that I had to try to sort out. Still looking for suggestions ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
