Welcome !

At first, we used berry juice and a sharpened stick. It was slow, messy, and bugs ate your homework.

Then, we used lamp soot and water, with the sharpened quill of a bird. Ink flow was very inconsistent.

We have come a long way, in controlling the leakage of ink onto paper. Enjoy it.

Hello northern neighbor and welcome to FPN!

FPN is certainly the most congenial and multinational FP resource on the net.

Best,

Dear everyone,

Thanks for the greetings. Nice to meet you all. :)

In the past, I primarily used word processors on PC's to write.

I like to use the Cross fountain pens as "everyday" writers. I'll probably change this habit later on.

I live in the Vancouver area.

I've already made a couple of postings:

1. I'm confused about the AU 750 marking and AU 585 label on MB149.

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/250098-montblanc-stod-hallmark/

2. I'm wondering what the pH is for the MB black ink.

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/253125-ph-of-montblanc-mystery-black-ink/

Yes, I agree that there is a lot to learn about fountain pens from others. Unfortunately, none of my grade schools taught anything about fountain pens.

Have a great day,

On the MB nib, the number is percentage. " 750 " means " 75% pure ". " 585 " means " 58.5% pure ".

From high school, you must recall that " AU " is the Periodic Table symbol for gold. Since 24 karat

is 100% pure gold, 75% = 18k, and 58.5% = 14k.

Why can't the Germans ( ) speak English, like everyone else ?

Thanks Sasha,

Yes, I know the following already:

750/1000 = 18K.

585/1000 = 14K.

But, the sticker on the cardboard box shows: 585 and the nib shows 750. It's inconsistent. Have you ever heard of this problem before? Are the newer 2013 model MB149's supposed to have 585's or 750's?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
